The Office Chair Wobbles

I. Inspecting the Wobbling Location

1. Feel the Wobbling Part: After sitting on the chair, gently rock your body forward, backward, left, and right to determine the most obvious wobbling location, such as the armrests, seat cushion, base, or the connection between the chair legs.
2. Check the Screws: Focus on inspecting the screws on the inner side of the armrests, the bottom of the seat cushion, and the interface between the base and the gas lift. If a screw is loose, there will be a gap around the screw hole, and you can confirm its looseness by manually shaking the screw.
3. Test the Gas Lift: Rotate the chair to observe if there is any stuttering and check if the height adjustment is smooth. If the height adjustment is unresponsive or the rotation is stiff, it may be due to wear on the gas lift or base components.
4. Examine the Connection between the Chair Legs and Crossbars: For wooden chairs or chairs with fabric straps, check if the connections are loose. If the rubber bands or elastic straps lose their elasticity or the tenons become loose, it can also cause wobbling.

II. Repair Steps for Different Causes

1. Loose Screws
   • Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the loose screw counterclockwise. Spray a small amount of WD40 around the screw hole for lubrication and rust removal, and then tighten it clockwise.
   • If the screw hole is enlarged due to wear, take a toothpick or a thin wooden stick, dip it in white glue, and insert it into the hole. After the glue dries, screw the screw back in to enhance the fixing effect.
2. Worn or Leaking Gas Lift
   • Replace the gas lift (the overall cost is about 19 yuan). Operation steps:
     • Spray WD40 on the connection between the gas lift and the base and let it sit for 1 minute;
     • Use a hairdryer on the hot air setting to blow on the connection to make the metal parts expand due to heat, facilitating separation;
     • Use a heavy-duty pipe wrench to grip the gas lift, rotate it counterclockwise, and pull out the old lift with force;
     • Clean the installation hole in the base, insert the new gas lift vertically, and tap it gently with a hammer to secure it.
3. Deformed Base or Worn Components
   • Open the bottom cover and check if the plastic clips are brittle and broken or if the axle of the casters is misaligned.
   • If the clips are loose, use pliers to reset them. If the plastic parts are broken or the casters are severely misaligned, replace the entire base assembly, and make sure to choose a compatible model.

Additional Note: If the chair comes with a separately packaged gas lift and is self-installed, sit on it forcefully a few times to make the connection between the gas lift and the seat tighter.
