Office Chair Parts Anatomy: Parts & How They Work

Admin October 25, 2026

The key components of an office chair and their functions mainly include the following parts:

Lumbar Support System

The lumbar support is a core component of an office chair, directly affecting sitting posture and health. Dynamic lumbar tracking design (such as the ZeroG Flow dynamic lumbar support system of SumLush Xia Cai Mu Fit CC) can automatically adjust the support force as the body moves forward and backward, adapting to different sitting postures. The BackFit four-way back-lumbar fitting system supports vertical and horizontal adjustments, ensuring a natural fit between the lower back and the chair back and reducing lumbar pressure. Some high-end models also adopt zoned support technology, providing differentiated support for the L1-L5 lumbar vertebrae.

Seat Depth and Height Adjustment

Seat depth adjustment should ensure a 2-3 finger gap between the front edge of the seat cushion and the back of the knee to avoid compressing the leg nerves. Seat height adjustment should allow the feet to rest flat on the ground naturally, with the thighs parallel to the ground. Some models adopt a 10-year anti-fatigue compression design, using high-density foam or memory foam filling combined with a reinforced seat frame structure to ensure no deformation over long-term use.

Armrest Adjustment Function

The height of the armrests should match the height of the desk, keeping the elbows at a 90ยฐ angle when the arms hang naturally. Multi-directional adjustable armrests support vertical (usually in a range of 5-10 cm), horizontal (3-8 cm), and angular (ยฑ15ยฐ) adjustments to adapt to different scenarios such as typing and reading. Some models are also equipped with flip-up armrests for easy storage or use close to the desk.

Recline and Locking Mechanism

The recline function should have stepless damping adjustment, allowing users of different weights to use it smoothly by controlling the tilt force through a chassis knob. The locking angle usually supports 3-5 gear adjustments (such as 90ยฐ-135ยฐ) to meet work and rest needs. The headrest (not standard) should support height and angle adjustments to fit the neck curve and provide neck support.

Chassis and Load-Bearing Components

The chassis is the safety core of an office chair and should be equipped with an SGS safety-certified gas lift (passing 100,000 lift tests) and a high-strength base (such as a PP five-claw base with a load capacity of up to 150 kg). Silent universal casters are made of PU material, reducing movement noise while being wear-resistant. Some models are also equipped with explosion-proof steel plates to further enhance safety.

Mesh Back and Seat Cushion Materials

The mesh back design should balance support and breathability. A large-curved back frame paired with a highly elastic and breathable mesh (such as AirFlex technology) can disperse back pressure while maintaining air circulation. The seat cushion material should balance support and comfort. The zoned pressure-relief design uses a combination of foams with different densities to relieve pressure on the buttocks and thighs. Some models also use 3D breathable fabrics to improve the summer use experience.

Safety Tip: Office chairs should pass international certifications (such as the EU EN 1335 and the US BIFMA standards) to avoid choosing products with risks such as backrest breakage and bolt failure.
