Sitting on an Office Chair for a Long Time
Admin October 16, 2026
Sitting on an office chair for a long time may lead to two main issues: chair malfunctions and damage to human health.

Chair Malfunction Issues
- Loose connecting screws: The screws at the connection points of the backrest, armrests, base, and chair legs may become loose due to long-term sitting stress and frequent reclining movements, creating gaps between components. When the body presses down, these gaps cause a creaking noise. Tightening the screws can generally resolve this issue.
- Lack of lubrication in the base swivel: In chairs with a rocking and reclining function, the internal metal springs and swivel positions may dry out over time, causing metal-on-metal friction and noise with movement. Applying lubricant to the metal swivel can eliminate the noise.
- Wear and tear at the connection between the gas lift and the five-star base: The contact points between the top of the gas lift and the base, and the bottom of the gas lift and the five-star base, may wear down over time due to constant weight-bearing, creating gaps that produce friction noise when the body moves.
- Aging and deformation of plastic frame components: Low-cost chairs often feature thin plastic frames that may slightly deform and become structurally compressed under prolonged sitting pressure, leading to persistent noise from gap friction. This issue is generally difficult to fully repair.
- Dry and stuck wheel bearings: When the chair moves, the internal bearings of the wheels may lack oil, causing dry rolling friction and noise. Applying lubricant to the wheel bearings can resolve this issue. Simple daily solutions include tightening all loose screws and applying a bit of lubricant to metal swivels and connection gaps, which can eliminate most noises. To reduce noise at the source, prioritize chairs with a thickened metal base, a sturdy overall frame, and heavy-duty materials when making a purchase.
Human Health Issues
- Impact on female cervical health: For women, maintaining a single sitting posture for extended periods without adequate movement can not only affect blood circulation in the lower body but may also lead to pelvic floor muscle laxity, thereby impacting the position and health of the cervix. This increases the risk of cervical issues and may trigger some chronic diseases that indirectly affect cervical health.
- Localized bodily discomfort: Sitting for more than eight hours a day can lead to issues such as a hollowed-out lower back, tense shoulders and neck, and pressure on the buttocks. Sitting in an unsuitable chair for extended periods can intensify the discomfort of a sore and aching lower back.
