The Backrest of the Office Chair Falls Off

Admin October 11, 2026

If the backrest of your office chair falls off, you can try the following repair methods, selecting the appropriate solution based on the specific cause of the damage:

1. Loose or Worn Screws

After prolonged use, the screws at the connection points of the chair may become loose or the threads may wear out, causing the backrest to become unstable.

  • Loose Screws: Tighten the loose screws using a screwdriver or an Allen wrench, being careful to control the force to avoid stripping the threads.
  • Stripped Screws: If the threads are worn, replace the screw with one of the same size but longer or with denser threads; or add a washer or apply thread-locking adhesive to increase friction. If the screw hole is severely stripped, fill it with wood shavings or toothpicks before tightening the screw.

2. Buckles Not Properly Engaged or Damaged

Some chairs have backrests connected by buckles, which may come loose or break due to improper assembly or long-term use.

  • Buckles Not Properly Engaged: Check the connection points between the backrest and the chair body to ensure the buckles are fully engaged. For example, the clips at the bottom of the back panel should be hooked over the metal rod and pressed firmly into place with the palm of your hand.
  • Broken Buckles: Purchase buckles of the same model for replacement; for emergency repairs, you can use nylon cable ties to secure them or fill the gaps with hot-melt adhesive.

3. Broken Connectors or Structural Fatigue

Long-term stress can cause cracks or even breakage in plastic or metal connectors, which is a natural manifestation of structural fatigue.

  • Broken Plastic Connectors: If the break is not at a load-bearing part, you can glue it with AB adhesive, then secure it with adjustable clamps or tape after application; if it is at a load-bearing part, it is recommended to replace the part.
  • Deformed Metal Connectors: Use pliers or other tools to straighten the deformed part and restore its original structure.
  • Cracked Wooden Frame: Apply woodworking glue to the crack, clamp it tightly, and let it sit for more than 12 hours for the glue to dry.

4. Broken or Deformed Metal Structure

If the metal frame inside the backrest is broken or deformed, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to avoid safety hazards caused by self-welding.

5. Replacing Parts

If the screws, buckles, or connectors are severely worn and cannot be repaired, you need to disassemble the old parts and replace them with new ones. When disassembling, note the screw sizes to ensure the new parts fit properly.

Special Reminders:

  • Do not disassemble the pneumatic rod of a pneumatic-lift chair by yourself to avoid high-pressure risks.
  • After repair, gently shake the backrest to test its stability and confirm there is no looseness before normal use.
  • If the screw hole is severely stripped, the connection is broken, or the pneumatic rod is faulty, it is recommended to contact a professional for repair or replace the chair.
