How to Prevent an Office Chair from Moving

Admin October 10, 2026

To prevent the wheels of an office chair from moving, you can achieve this through the following methods, with the core principles being to increase friction, fix the wheels, or improve the usage environment:

1. Temporary Solution: Use Folded A4 Paper for Fixing Fold an A4 paper horizontally multiple times until it becomes thick, and then insert it into the gap between the wheels and the ground. The folded structure of the paper can increase the friction between the wheels and the ground, especially suitable for smooth floors (such as tiles and wooden floors). This method is low-cost and easy to operate, but you need to regularly check if the paper has shifted or worn out. Long-term use may affect the flexibility of the wheels.

2. Specialized Tool: Install a Seat Wheel Fixer There are fixers specifically designed for office chairs on the market, with a principle similar to the anti-slip devices of refrigerators and washing machines. The fixer is usually made of hard plastic or metal and is fixed to the wheel axle with buckles or screws, directly contacting the ground to create resistance. After installation, the chair can remain stationary, but you need to ensure that the fixer matches the wheel model to avoid looseness due to size mismatch.

3. Environment Optimization: Lay a Computer Chair Carpet Choose a short-pile or rubber-backed carpet to cover the office area. The roughness of the carpet surface can significantly increase the rolling resistance of the wheels. At the same time, the carpet can absorb some of the small bumps on the ground, reducing automatic sliding caused by uneven floors. This method also has a decorative effect, but you need to regularly clean the carpet to prevent dust from reducing the friction effect.

4. Basic Maintenance: Ensure a Flat Floor and Good Wheel Condition

  • Floor Inspection: Use a level to check if the floor is tilted, fill in potholes or adjust the position of the chair to avoid unidirectional sliding caused by gravity.
  • Wheel Replacement: If the wheel surface is worn (such as the plastic layer becoming thinner or the rubber aging), replace it with a new wheel in a timely manner. Worn wheels will reduce grip, especially in humid environments where they are prone to slipping.

5. Upgrade Accessories: Choose Fixed Wheels

  • Fixed Corner Fittings: Replace the original universal wheels with fixed corner wheels. These wheels have no rotation function and are suitable for workstations that do not require movement.
  • Wheels with Brake Pads: Some wheels have built-in brake devices that can be triggered by stepping or pressing to temporarily fix the position of the chair.
  • Seat-Activated Brake Wheels: The wheels automatically lock when you sit down and unlock when you stand up, suitable for scenarios that require frequent switching between movement and fixation.

Precautions:

  • If using a fixer or fixed wheels, confirm in advance whether the chair structure supports modification to avoid damaging the chair body.
  • Long-term fixation of the chair may affect usage flexibility. It is recommended to choose a combination of methods according to actual needs (such as a carpet + wheel replacement for wear).
