The Backrest of the Office Chair is Too Straight

Admin October 11, 2026

The issue of the backrest of an office chair being too straight can be improved through methods such as adjusting functions, adding accessories, replacing the chair, adding cushions, and cultivating good sitting habits.

I. Utilize the chair's built-in adjustment functions
Many office chairs are equipped with angle adjustment mechanisms, with common types including lever-type, knob-type, and electric-type. The lever-type adjuster is usually located beneath the seat; by pulling or pushing the lever and then leaning back to adjust the angle before releasing to lock it. The knob-type adjuster is located on the side or back of the seat; turning it clockwise tightens the backrest angle, while turning it counterclockwise loosens it. Electric adjustment allows for precise angle control through buttons on the control panel. It is recommended to adjust the angle according to the usage scenario: maintain an angle of 100ยฐโ€“110ยฐ for focused work and adjust it to 110ยฐโ€“135ยฐ for rest to match the natural curvature of the human spine.

II. Add external accessories
If the chair's backrest angle is fixed or the adjustment range is insufficient, the support can be improved by adding a lumbar support or cushion. The lumbar support should fit snugly into the lumbar concave area to eliminate the sensation of the waist hanging in the air. The cushion can be made of memory foam material, whose slow rebound property allows it to automatically shape according to the contour of the back, dispersing pressure and relieving muscle tension. The installation position of the accessories should cover the lumbar L3-L5 segments to avoid ineffective support due to being too high or too low.

III. Choose a chair with an adjustable backrest angle
High-end office chairs are usually equipped with multi-angle adjustment functions, and some models support locking at an angle of over 135ยฐ to meet the need for a noon break. When selecting a chair, pay attention to whether the adjustment method is convenient (such as whether it supports one-touch locking), whether the angle range covers the interval of 100ยฐโ€“135ยฐ, and whether the backrest material has elastic support properties.

IV. Add soft cushions
For chairs with overly hard backrest materials (such as hard plastic or metal frames), memory foam or down cushions can be added on top of the original backrest. It is recommended that the thickness of the memory foam cushion be 5โ€“8 cm, and for down cushions, choose models with high loft to provide sufficient cushioning and reduce direct pressure on the lumbar spine.

V. Cultivate good sitting habits
Even after adjusting the backrest angle, it is still necessary to maintain the natural S-shaped curve of the spine: lean back slightly so that the body forms an angle of 100ยฐโ€“120ยฐ with the backrest; keep both feet flat on the ground with the knees at the same height as the hip joints; get up and move around every 30โ€“60 minutes, promoting blood circulation through stretching or walking to avoid muscle fatigue caused by prolonged isometric contraction.
