Drawbacks of Sleeping on an Office Chair

Admin October 17, 2026

Sleeping on an office chair has multiple drawbacks, mainly including structural damage to the cervical and lumbar spine, inability to obtain true rest affecting sleep quality, and other health risks.

Firstly, structural damage to the cervical and lumbar spine is a prominent issue. When sleeping in a sitting position, the neck and waist often lack effective support and are in an unnatural bent or twisted state. This subjects the intervertebral discs of the cervical and lumbar spine to abnormal pressure, easily causing neck and shoulder stiffness and back pain. Maintaining this poor posture for a long time may also accelerate the occurrence of degenerative diseases such as cervical spondylosis and lumbar disc herniation. According to the latest 2026 workplace health survey, 88% of office workers suffer from shoulder and neck pain throughout the year, and among them, 70% of those who are accustomed to taking a nap on a chair have a higher risk of shoulder and neck blood vessel compression than those who sleep face down. Over the long term, it can also speed up the straightening of the cervical physiological curvature.

Secondly, inability to obtain true rest, affecting sleep quality. Due to the uncomfortable sleeping posture on an office chair, the body cannot fully relax, making it difficult to enter the deep sleep stage. This leads to light sleep, frequent dreams, and insufficient repair of the brain and body. After a nap, instead of recovering energy, one may feel dizzy, groggy, and exhausted, affecting work efficiency in the afternoon.

In addition, there are other health risks. On the one hand, an incorrect sleeping posture on a chair can compress the shoulder and neck blood vessels, and in severe cases, it can cause temporary blurred vision. On the other hand, an improper sleeping posture on a chair compresses the shoulder and neck blood vessels, causing the carotid and vertebral arteries to be pulled and squeezed, and the blood flow speed to drop sharply. One may feel groggy after waking up. Moreover, although sleeping on an office chair does not directly compress the chest and abdomen like sleeping face down on a desk, an improper posture may also affect the blood supply to the brain. At the same time, if the abdomen is compressed to a certain extent, it can also affect normal digestive function, potentially leading to indigestion or stomach discomfort. Over the long term, it may affect intestinal health and increase the risk of gastroesophageal reflux.
