Sleeping on an Office Chair
Admin October 17, 2026
Sleeping on an office chair has both benefits and potential risks, so it's important to adjust your posture and control the duration.

Benefits
- Relieving Fatigue: A short nap on an office chair can provide a brief relaxation for both the body and mind, effectively alleviating the fatigue caused by work and restoring some energy to the body.
- Improving Efficiency: After restoring energy, attention and work efficiency will be enhanced, and thinking will become more agile, which helps in better completing work tasks subsequently.
- Enhancing Mood: Appropriate rest can regulate emotions, relieve negative emotions such as tension and anxiety, and enable people to face work with a more positive attitude.
- Reducing Stress: It can relieve muscle tension and help the body release stress, keeping the body and mind in a relatively relaxed state.
Potential Risks
- Compressing Blood Vessels: Incorrect posture can compress the blood vessels in the shoulders and neck. For example, when sleeping on an office chair, if you lean back directly and let your neck hang in the air, or tilt your head and lean against the armrest wall, the carotid and vertebral arteries in the neck will be stretched and compressed, leading to a sharp drop in blood flow speed. After waking up, you may experience a stiff neck, numb hands, and dizziness. In severe cases, you may also have temporary blurred vision and headaches. Over the long term, it can accelerate the straightening of the cervical spine's physiological curvature.
- Chronic Strain: Maintaining a semi-reclined posture for a long time, especially without proper support, can put significant pressure on the lumbar and cervical spine, potentially leading to chronic strain.
- Signaling Fatigue: Unscientific rest postures can also send signals of physical fatigue, such as a stiff neck, numb arms, swollen fingers, chest tightness, and acid reflux in the stomach after waking up.
Proper Practices
- Adjusting the Backrest Angle: Adjust the backrest of the office chair to an inclination angle of 110 - 120 degrees.
- Providing Lumbar Support: Place a lumbar support cushion behind your waist to support the lumbar spine.
- Protecting the Neck: Use a U-shaped pillow with support for your neck to prevent it from hanging and swaying in the air. If you don't have a U-shaped pillow temporarily, find a hard, small cushion and place it behind your neck for temporary support.
- Leg Posture: It's best to keep your legs flat on the ground. If possible, use a small footrest. Avoid crossing your legs.
- Controlling the Duration: The duration of sleeping on an office chair should not be too long. It's best to control it within 20 to 30 minutes, or you can limit the nap time on an office chair to about 17 minutes to avoid affecting normal sleep at night. Also, try to avoid maintaining the same posture for a long time and suggest changing your posture every once in a while.
