Sitting on an Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

When sitting on an office chair, ordinary chairs can easily cause fatigue, while ergonomic chairs are more comfortable but require attention to quality and safety.

Experience with ordinary office chairs: Ordinary office chairs have a basic design, typically featuring an upright backrest, an empty space behind the waist, and a flat seat cushion. This design is acceptable for short-term use, but prolonged sitting can lead to back fatigue. Since the body needs to adjust its posture to fit the chair, lacking sufficient support, the muscles in the waist and back remain in a constant state of tension, which can easily cause soreness and discomfort.

Advantages of ergonomic office chairs: Ergonomic office chairs, on the other hand, focus more on fitting the body's curves and providing comprehensive support. Their lumbar support is designed to hold the lumbar spine in place, the backrest fits the natural contours of the spine, the armrests can support the forearms, and the headrest supports the neck, reducing neck pressure. Additionally, the seat depth and height can usually be adjusted according to an individual's body shape, reducing the need for the body to strain and effectively sharing the load on the back, thus enhancing comfort during prolonged sitting.

Quality issues with ergonomic chairs: However, the quality of ergonomic chairs on the market varies greatly. Some products have lumbar supports fixed to the backrest, which can become suspended when changing positions, failing to provide continuous support; the mesh material may be too soft or too hard, affecting seating comfort; the base may experience stuttering or lack of cushioning when reclining, affecting the user experience. Even some ergonomic chairs have poorly designed seat cushions, leading to lumbar suspension and numbness in the buttocks during prolonged sitting.

Safety issues with office chairs: In addition to comfort, the safety of office chairs is also worth noting. In recent years, the United States and Canada have recalled office chairs made in China due to issues such as potential backrest breakage and bolt failure, posing risks of falls or injuries. Inspections by the State Administration for Market Regulation have also found that some products have significant stability issues, such as broken five-star casters and base tipping. Therefore, when purchasing an office chair, in addition to considering comfort, it is also important to pay attention to the product's safety certifications and quality inspection reports.
