Replace Office Chair Casters

Admin October 16, 2026

The method for replacing office chair casters depends on the damage situation. You can choose to replace either the caster wheels or the entire five-star chair base. The specific steps are as follows:

If only the damaged caster wheels need to be replaced

  1. Identify the wheel type: Turn the chair upside down and observe the connection method of the damaged wheel. If there is a screw rod at the top, it is a threaded type; if there is a metal pin at the top, it is a pin type.
  2. Remove the old wheels:
    • Threaded type: Use your hands or a tool (such as a wrench) to turn the wheel counterclockwise and unscrew it.
    • Pin type: Pinch the wheel with both hands, press it downwards, and rotate it left and right. Use the elastic deformation to release the snap ring and then pull it out.
  3. Install the new wheels:
    • Threaded type: Align the new wheel with the hole and turn it clockwise to screw it in. Make sure it is tightened and there is no looseness.
    • Pin type: Align the pin with the hole in the base and insert it vertically. A clicking sound indicates that the snap ring has been engaged.

If the entire five-star chair base needs to be replaced

  1. Remove the old five-star base:
    • Method 1: Place the chair on its side or upside down on a soft pad. Observe the connection method between the center and the gas lift (central column). If it is fixed with a flat washer and snap ring, use pliers to remove the snap ring and then pull out the five-star base. If it is a conical press fit, use a rubber mallet to lightly tap the connection to loosen it and then remove it.
    • Method 2: Step on the five-star base frame with one foot, grab both sides of the seat cushion with both hands, shake it left and right, and lift it up. Repeat the operation until it is removed.
  2. Select a new five-star base: Ensure that the model and size match the old one. Give priority to galvanized iron or thickened steel materials (more durable than plastic).
  3. Install the new five-star base: Align the new base with the bottom of the gas lift and fix it according to the original connection method (such as pressing in the snap ring for snap-ring fixation or lightly tapping for conical press fit until it is tightly fitted).

Pre-repair suggestions and precautions

  • Evaluate the repair value: If the chair is inexpensive, has been used for a long time, or is severely damaged (such as a broken five-star base), it may be more cost-effective to replace it with a new chair.
  • Prepare tools: Screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, rubber mallets, etc..
  • Operate safely: Avoid using excessive force to prevent secondary damage to the gas lift or the seat surface. It is recommended to place a soft cloth underneath during disassembly to protect the surface.
  • Material selection: If the five-star base is made of galvanized iron or thickened steel, its durability is better than that of plastic, which can reduce the frequency of subsequent repairs.
