Relief from Prolonged Sitting in Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

Relieving discomfort from prolonged sitting in office chairs can be achieved through chair yoga exercises, specific movements, and choosing the right ergonomic chair.

Chair Yoga Exercises

There are four practical chair yoga exercises suitable for the office environment, with small movements ideal for performing during work hours.

  • Exercise One: Sit facing forward on the chair, lean your back slightly backward, wrap your hands around the back of your head, inhale and open your arms backward and upward, look towards the ceiling, and open your elbows to the sides. Exhale, tuck your chin in and bring your elbows inward, lower your head to look at your abdomen, look upward, and exhale to bring inward. On the last repetition, slowly sit up straight. This exercise stretches the neck and shoulder muscles, relieving stiffness caused by prolonged sitting.
  • Exercise Two: Turn to face the back of the chair, point your toes outward, grab the opposite corner of the chair back with your left hand, raise your right arm high, exhale and lean your body to the left, extending as much as possible. If your neck is uncomfortable, turn your head to look down to the right, press your feet firmly on the ground, use one side of your waist to bring your body back, and then switch sides. This exercise stretches the muscles of the lower back and sides, reducing lower back fatigue.

Specific Movements for Relief

Hold onto the back of the chair with both hands and perform relevant movements with one leg. Holding for 30 seconds can alleviate lower back and buttock pain caused by prolonged sitting. This movement mobilizes the joints of the lower back and hips, promotes blood circulation, and relieves muscle tension.

Choosing the Right Ergonomic Chair

  • Size Matching: People of different heights and body types have varying requirements for seat height, depth, and backrest height. Ensure that the chair's dimensions match your own when making a purchase.
  • Core Components: Focus on the lumbar support, backrest, and seat cushion. The lumbar support should fit the curve of your lower back and be adjustable to provide good support for your waist. The backrest should offer continuous support to reduce pressure on the spine. The seat cushion should balance support and comfort to avoid excessive pressure on the buttocks.
  • Adjustability: Features such as headrests, armrests, and recline angles enhance the flexibility of the chair's use and meet different sitting posture needs.
  • Quality and Safety: The chair's stability and lifespan are determined by the chassis structure, gas lift, five-star base, and overall materials. Choose products with reliable quality.
