Quality Report on Office Chairs

Admin October 17, 2026

The overall quality of office chairs is not optimistic. While there are some qualified cases, the unqualified issues involve multiple aspects, with swivel chairs having more problems.

I. Overall Quality Inspection Situation The State Administration for Market Regulation once conducted a national supervision inspection on office chair products, and the results showed poor quality. Out of the 90 batches of products inspected, 21 batches were unqualified, with a batch non-conformance rate of 23.3%. This indicates that nearly one-fourth of the office chair products on the market have quality defects, reflecting loopholes in the overall quality control of the industry that need to be addressed.

II. Main Unqualified Items The unqualified items involve multiple key indicators:

  1. Flame Retardancy: As indoor furniture, office chairs need to have a certain level of flame retardancy to ensure fire safety. If the flame retardancy does not meet the standards, it may accelerate the spread of fire in the event of a fire, threatening the lives of users.
  2. Caster Wear and Tear: Casters are the core components for the movement of office chairs, and their wear resistance directly affects the service life. If the wear is too fast, it may cause difficulties in moving the chair or damage, affecting the user experience.
  3. Safety: This includes structural stability, load-bearing capacity, etc. If there are defects in design or manufacturing, it may lead to accidents such as chair tipping or breaking, causing physical harm to users.
  4. Formaldehyde Emission: If the materials of office chairs (such as panels, leather, sponge, etc.) contain excessive formaldehyde, they will release harmful gases over a long period, endangering the health of users and causing respiratory diseases or allergic reactions.

III. Prominent Quality Issues with Office Swivel Chairs Among the 21 batches of unqualified office chairs, 17 batches were swivel chairs, accounting for a high proportion of 81%. Due to their complex structure (including backrests, seats, armrests, lifting devices, rotating shafts, and casters), swivel chairs have more concentrated quality issues. Among them, pneumatic swivel chairs have the highest market share and have particularly prominent problems. If the safety of the pneumatic rod does not meet the standards (such as poor sealing or insufficient material strength), it will not only shorten the chair's service life but may also lead to serious safety accidents due to internal gas leakage or explosion.

IV. The Reference Value of Qualified Cases Although the overall quality is worrying, there are still qualified cases. For example, the office chairs purchased by a certain company have no obvious flaws in appearance. The seat cushions and backrests are designed in accordance with ergonomics, which can reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting. The five-star base and wheels are sturdy, and the adjustment functions are normal without any gaps or poor welding. Such products meet the work needs of employees through strict quality control and provide a quality benchmark for the industry.
