Lying on an Office Chair During Pregnancy

Admin October 11, 2026

Generally, pregnant women can rest on an office chair for a short period, but it is not recommended to lie on it for a long time, and attention should be paid to posture and duration when lying down. Details are as follows:

  • Not recommended to lie on an office chair for a long time: Lying on a recliner or office chair for a long time, especially in a semi-reclined or fully reclined position, poses certain risks. A recliner makes the body lean backward, and the uterus may press on the inferior vena cava, reducing blood return, which can lead to fetal hypoxia. Pregnant women may also experience discomfort such as dizziness. Therefore, an office chair should not be used as a bed for long periods.
  • Precautions for short-term lying: If a pregnant woman insists on resting on an office chair, the angle should be adjusted to the most gentle, close to a sitting position, and the duration of each lying session should not exceed 15 - 20 minutes. At the same time, a pillow should be placed on the legs to avoid a suspended waist, reduce pressure on the waist, and keep the body in a relatively comfortable state.
  • Change position immediately if abnormalities occur: During rest on an office chair, pregnant women should closely monitor their own and the fetus's conditions. If symptoms such as dizziness, chest tightness, blackouts, sudden increase or decrease in fetal movements, or a tight and hard abdomen (contractions) occur, the position must be changed immediately to prevent the adverse situation from worsening.
  • Recommended lateral position in the second and third trimesters: During pregnancy, pregnant women should not stand or sit for long periods and can take appropriate walks. In the second and third trimesters, it is recommended to mainly lie in a lateral position. Sleeping on the left side can reduce the right rotation of the uterus, promote placental blood circulation, alleviate uterine blood supply insufficiency, and help the fetus absorb nutrients. If sleeping on the left side continuously is tiring, alternating between left and right sides is acceptable, but try to avoid lying flat or on the stomach to prevent affecting the normal development of the fetus and the health of the pregnant woman herself.
