Placing an Office Chair Beside the Bed

Admin October 11, 2026

There are multiple issues with placing an office chair beside the bed, and it is not recommended to do so.

From a psychological and sleep science perspective: At night, when the bedroom is dimly lit, human visual perception declines, and the irregular outline of an office chair can easily be misinterpreted by the brain as a 'human figure'. This subconscious alertness triggers the body's stress response, leading to lighter sleep, frequent awakenings, or vivid dreams. Prolonged exposure to this state can reduce the duration of deep slow-wave sleep, increase the number of micro-awakenings during the night, severely impact sleep quality, and consequently have adverse effects on daytime mental state, work efficiency, and physical health.

From the perspective of traditional Feng Shui beliefs: Placing an empty chair beside the bed, especially when it is not in use, is considered to 'invite negative energy'. This belief holds that an empty chair can easily accumulate unnecessary energy fields, disrupting the originally serene magnetic environment of the bedroom. Additionally, it may undermine the 'supportive backdrop' pattern of the bedroom. In Feng Shui theory, having a supportive element behind the bed symbolizes stability and reliance, whereas the presence of an empty chair may disrupt this sense of stability. Furthermore, the sharp edges of the chair can create 'sharp energy clashes', obstructing the free and harmonious flow of 'Qi' (vital energy) indoors, affecting the fortune and health of the occupants.

From the perspective of home safety and convenience: When getting up at night, due to insufficient lighting and a semi-awake state, one can easily trip over the chair legs. For elderly individuals, pregnant women, or children with mobility issues, such falls can lead to serious consequences like fractures. Moreover, the chair occupies floor space in the bedroom, making the path to and from the bed crowded. In small bedrooms, this sense of crowding becomes more pronounced, exacerbating the feeling of spatial confinement. Additionally, an empty chair can easily become a clutter zone, affecting the tidiness and aesthetics of the bedroom, increasing the psychological burden on the occupants, and interfering with sleep emotions.
