Admin October 09, 2026

Office chairs are chairs equipped for convenience in daily work and social activities, with office swivel chairs being a typical representative featuring rotation and height adjustment functions.

Classification and Functions

  • Classification: OfficeMate classifies office chairs into narrow and broad categories. The narrow sense refers to backrest chairs used by individuals in a seated position for desk work; the broad sense encompasses all chairs used in offices, including executive chairs and staff chairs. Office swivel chairs fall under the category of office supplies and include series such as executive chairs, mid-back chairs, and staff chairs. Among them, executive chairs feature a high-back structure and come standard with armrests, while staff chairs have a low-back design without armrests.
  • Functions: The core components of an office swivel chair include a seat cushion, backrest, five-star base, casters, and a pneumatic height adjustment system. The height can be adjusted via a pneumatic rod, and rotation buffering and movement locking are achieved using elastic supports and rollers. Its design conforms to ergonomic principles, providing adjustable lumbar support, armrests, and headrests to maintain the body's natural physiological curves, making it suitable for office, home, and medical settings.

Quality and Safety Issues

  • International Recall Events: On March 2, 2023, the United States and Canada recalled office chairs manufactured in China due to the risk of backrest breakage, which posed a falling hazard. Twelve reports had been received, including ten injury cases. On January 16, 2025, the United States recalled the WorkPro Momentum office chairs manufactured in China again because the bolts might fail, posing a falling risk. Seven reports had been received, with two people suffering minor injuries.
  • Domestic Inspection Findings: On September 30, 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation conducted a national supervision and inspection of office chairs and found that 15 batches of products were unqualified, with stability issues being prominent. This reflected defects in the structural design or material usage of some products.

Industry Development Trends

  • Industrial Foundation: Since 2000, China's office chair industry has developed through the OEM model, with Anji County in Zhejiang Province becoming a global production base. In 2024, China's office chair production reached 177 million units, with exports of 84.64 million units, accounting for a significant share of the global market.
  • Smart Trends: The industry is showing a trend towards intelligence, with some products integrating pressure sensors, health monitoring, and APP control functions to meet users' demands for health management and convenient operation. The market size for hydraulic lift swivel chairs is expected to exceed 16 billion yuan by 2025, indicating sustained growth in demand for high-end, smart office chairs.
