Office Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

Office chairs are chairs equipped for the convenience of work in daily work and social activities. In a broad sense, they include all chairs used in offices, and in a narrow sense, they refer to backrest chairs used for desk work in a sitting position.

Classification and Functions

  • Classification by Function: Swivel office chairs are a typical representative, equipped with rotation and height adjustment functions, belonging to the category of office supplies. They include a series such as executive chairs, mid-back chairs, and staff chairs. Executive chairs feature a high-back structure and come standard with armrests, suitable for management use; staff chairs have a low-back and no-armrest design to meet the needs of ordinary staff.
  • Core Components: Composed of a seat cushion, backrest, five-star base, casters, and a pneumatic height adjustment system. The pneumatic rod can adjust the height, the elastic support and rollers enable rotation buffering and movement locking functions, and some products also integrate intelligent functions such as pressure sensors, health monitoring, and APP control.

History and Development

  • Origin: The earliest prototype of an office chair can be traced back to the forward-tilting wooden chair in Egypt around 1900 BC, designed for specific work scenarios.
  • Modern Development: In 1849, Thomas Warren invented and produced the first truly modern office chair in history, featuring rotation, sliding, and an elastic soft seat surface, laying the foundation for subsequent development. Since 2000, China's office chair industry has developed through the OEM model, with Anji County in Zhejiang Province becoming a global production base. In 2024, production reached 177 million pieces, with exports of 84.64 million pieces, and the industry scale continues to expand.

Quality and Safety

  • International Recall Incidents: On March 2, 2023, the United States and Canada recalled office chairs made in China due to the risk of the backrest breaking, posing a falling hazard. Twelve reports have been received, including ten injury cases. On January 16, 2025, the United States recalled the WorkPro Momentum office chairs made in China again due to the risk of bolt failure and falling hazards. Seven reports have been received, with two people suffering minor injuries.
  • Domestic Inspection Situation: On September 30, 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation conducted a national supervision and inspection of office chairs and found that 15 batches of products were unqualified, with stability issues being prominent, indicating a need to strengthen quality supervision.
