Office Chair Wrist Support

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair wrist support can be achieved by adjusting armrest parameters or using auxiliary tools, with the core goal of reducing the risk of strain in the shoulders, elbows, and wrists.

I. Adjusting Armrest Parameters

  1. Height Adjustment

    • Ensure that the tip of the elbow is level with the armrest, with a standard height range of 20-25 centimeters. After adjustment, two conditions must be met: the armrest fully supports the weight of the arm, and there is no lifting or sinking sensation in the shoulders. If the armrest is too high, it can cause the shoulders to rise, increasing pressure on the trapezius muscles; if too low, it forces the elbows to droop, causing tension in the forearm muscles.
    • Adjustment method: Gradually adjust using the lift buttons or knobs beneath the armrest. Maintain an upright sitting posture and let your arms hang naturally, using the elbow as the reference point for positioning.
  2. Forward and Backward Adjustment

    • Push the armrest forward or backward so that the elbow's flexion point (i.e., the medial epicondyle of the humerus) aligns vertically with the edge of the desk. At this point, the forearm should naturally rest on the armrest, with the wrist flat against the desk while operating the mouse and keyboard, avoiding excessive wrist flexion or extension.
    • Significance of adjustment: If the armrest is not pushed forward enough, the forearm must extend to reach the desk, causing the shoulders to lean forward; if pushed forward too much, it may press against the abdomen, affecting breathing.
  3. Width Adjustment

    • When your arms hang naturally, adjust the width of the armrests so that the inner sides are flush with the outer sides of the upper arms, with a spacing of no more than 2 centimeters. For individuals with a larger build, the spacing can be widened to 3 centimeters more than shoulder width; for those with a smaller build, it is recommended to choose armrests with an inward-adjustment function to avoid arm suspension.
    • Purpose of adjustment: Overly wide armrests can cause the shoulders to abduct, increasing the load on the deltoid muscles; overly narrow armrests may restrict arm movement, leading to muscle stiffness.

II. Using Auxiliary Tools
If the adjustment functions of the office chair armrests are limited, tools such as computer arm supports can be used to further protect the wrists. For example:

  • 574 Computer Arm Elbow Support: Features a desk extension board design that can be fixed to the edge of the desk, providing arm support, priced at approximately 34.2 yuan.
  • Computer Desk Arm Support with Mouse Tray: Integrates a mouse tray and wrist pad, with adjustable height and angle, priced at approximately 79.0 yuan.

Precautions: After adjustment, maintain an upright sitting posture with your back against the chair and feet flat on the ground to avoid negating the effects of armrest adjustment due to incorrect posture. For those who use computers for extended periods, it is recommended to move the shoulders, neck, and wrists every 30 minutes to prevent static strain.
