Office Chair Wood Breakage Repair

Admin October 13, 2026

If the wooden part of an office chair breaks, you can try the following general repair methods, adjusting the specific operations according to the actual situation:

  1. Observe the breakage situation First, determine the location and extent of the breakage and whether it involves key structural parts. If the break is at a load-bearing core (such as the connection point of the chair legs), prioritize evaluating the feasibility of repair. If it is a decorative part (such as the edge of the armrest), the repair difficulty is relatively low. If the broken surface is uneven or has debris, collect it carefully for backup.

  2. Prepare tools and materials Select tools according to the broken material:

  • Glue: AB glue (fast-drying type) or woodworking-specific white glue (requiring long-term fixation) are recommended. Avoid using ordinary glue to prevent secondary cracking.
  • Tools: Clamps (to fix the broken surface), an electric drill (if drilling for reinforcement is needed), sandpaper (80-200 grit coarse sandpaper for grinding and 400 grit or higher fine sandpaper for polishing), cloth strips (for shaping), and cotton yarn (for maintenance).
  • Auxiliary materials: Beeswax (for maintenance) and wood paint that matches the color of the chair (optional).
  1. Remove old glue and clean If the broken surface was previously glued, use sandpaper or a small knife to completely remove the old glue residue. Avoid mixing old and new glue, which can reduce adhesion. Wipe the broken area with alcohol or water to ensure it is free of dust and oil.

  2. Grind and shape Use coarse sandpaper to grind the broken edges until smooth and remove burrs. Wrap the broken area with a cloth strip to simulate the shape of the surrounding curved surface. Ensure that the repaired part fits well with the overall structure. If there are gaps in the broken surface, fill them with a mixture of wood shavings and glue.

  3. Apply glue and fix Apply glue evenly on the broken surface. Applying thin layers multiple times is more secure than applying a single thick layer. Use clamps to fix the broken part from multiple directions with even pressure to avoid local displacement. If the broken surface is large, drill holes on both sides with an electric drill and insert wooden dowels or metal nails for reinforcement.

  4. Wait for solidification and secondary grinding Wait for solidification according to the glue instructions (about 2-4 hours for AB glue and 6-12 hours for white glue). After solidification, gently grind the surface with fine sandpaper to remove excess glue marks. Be careful not to damage the wood grain.

  5. Color and maintain If the color difference is obvious, adjust the color with wood paint and apply a thin coat to the repaired part. Apply the color in multiple layers to reduce the color difference. Finally, wipe the surface with cotton yarn dipped in beeswax to form a protective layer and enhance the luster.

Precautions:

  • Before repair, confirm the material of the chair (such as solid wood or particleboard). Different materials have different requirements for glue and tools.
  • If the break involves structural safety (such as chair legs or crossbeams), it is recommended to contact a professional carpenter for repair to avoid load-bearing risks caused by self-repair.
  • After repair, avoid using it immediately. Let it stand for 24 hours to ensure that the glue is completely solidified.
