Office Chair Wobbling

Admin October 11, 2026

Office chair wobbling while sitting may be caused by loose connecting screws, gas rod issues, caster problems, or material weight-bearing problems, and can be resolved through targeted inspection and repair.

1. Loose Connecting Screws
The backrest, armrests, base, and chair legs of an office chair are fixed with screws. Prolonged use or frequent wobbling can cause the screws to loosen. This creates gaps between components, resulting in a wobbling sensation with slight changes in sitting posture. Solution: Use a screwdriver to inspect all connecting parts, focusing on the joints between the base and chair legs, and the backrest and seat. Tighten any loose screws one by one. If a screw is stripped or the threads are worn, replace it with a screw of the same specification.

2. Gas Rod Issues
The gas rod is the core component connecting the seat to the five-star base, and its damage or wear can directly cause wobbling:

  • Gas Rod Seal Leakage: This manifests as stuttering during height adjustment, seat sinking, or black oil stains (hydraulic oil leakage) on the surface of the gas rod. The connection between the seat and base becomes loose, allowing for slight wobbling with minimal force.
  • Wear at the Joint Between the Gas Rod and Five-Star Base: After prolonged weight-bearing, the metal contact surface between the bottom of the gas rod and the hole in the five-star base wears down, creating gaps. Solution: If the gas rod is leaking or worn, it needs to be replaced with a new one. Choose a reputable brand (such as Onite) and confirm warranty services to avoid safety hazards caused by inferior gas rods.

3. Caster Problems
When casters are entangled with foreign objects or the wheels are suspended, the chair may wobble due to uneven force distribution:

  • Entanglement: Small debris such as hair or fibers can get caught in the wheel axles, obstructing wheel rotation and causing the chair to tilt.
  • Suspended Wheels: Uneven ground or chair legs not fully touching the ground (e.g., due to thick carpets) can cause some wheels to lift off the ground, destabilizing the chair. Solution: Clear any entanglement from the casters, carefully removing debris with tweezers or scissors; adjust the chair's position to ensure all wheels make even contact with the ground.

4. Material or Weight-Bearing Issues
Low-cost office chairs often use thin plastic frames or inferior metals, which can easily age and deform after prolonged use, leading to structural looseness. If the user's weight exceeds the chair's stated weight capacity (usually 100-120kg), the frame may bend, causing wobbling. Solution: If the chair's material is significantly degraded (e.g., plastic cracking, metal deformation), it is recommended to replace it with a chair that meets weight-bearing standards, prioritizing products with steel frames or thickened plastic materials.

Summary: Prioritize checking the screws and gas rod, as these are common causes of wobbling; if the issue persists, investigate the casters and material. Avoid violent shaking of the chair during daily use and regularly check the tightness of the screws to extend the chair's lifespan.
