Office Chair Without Backrest

Admin October 10, 2026

It is indeed true that some office chairs do not have backrests, and these chairs are commonly referred to as backless work stools or task stools.

Advantages of Backless Office Chairs:

  1. Space-saving and Mobile Flexibility: They feature a simple and lightweight design, with adjustable heights and some equipped with footrests, facilitating quick movement and turning between different work scenarios, especially suitable for environments with limited space.
  2. High Practical Functionality: They occupy little space, are sturdy and durable, and easy to install, making them ideal for scenarios requiring frequent standing up or short-term sitting.
  3. Specific Management Purposes: Some companies use them as management tools to encourage managers to actively engage with frontline work by breaking the comfortable environment.
  4. Personal Habit Preferences: Some users find that the backless design better suits their sitting habits and provides higher comfort.

Disadvantages of Backless Office Chairs:

  1. Lack of Lumbar Support: The suspended waist and back increase the load on the lumbar spine significantly. For example, the third lumbar vertebra of a 70-kilogram adult bears about 100 kilograms when standing, but the load can reach 150 kilograms when sitting without a backrest, and even triple the body weight when leaning forward.
  2. High Health Risks: Prolonged use can easily lead to lumbar muscle strain and may induce lumbar spine diseases such as disc herniation or chronic pain in the long term.
  3. Limited Application Scenarios: They are more suitable for operational scenarios requiring short-term sitting, such as kitchens, laboratories, and factory workshops, rather than long-term office environments.

Usage Recommendations:

  1. Maintain Correct Sitting Posture: Keep your waist and back straight, avoid twisting or leaning forward or backward; keep your thighs perpendicular to your calves, with your feet flat on the ground; adjust the seat height so that your thighs are parallel to the ground and your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle.
  2. Provide Auxiliary Support: Add a lumbar support or memory foam cushion at the waist to fill the gap between the waist and the chair and reduce lumbar spine pressure.
  3. Take Regular Breaks: Stand up and move around for 5-10 minutes every 40 minutes of continuous sitting, and relax your lumbar muscles through stretching and turning your head and neck.

Purchase Considerations: Pay close attention to the seat width, height adjustment function, and check the quality of components such as the gas lift, chair legs, and casters to ensure safety and stability.
