Office Chair with Short Armrests

Admin October 12, 2026

When the armrests of an office chair are short, the following methods can be used to solve the inconvenience of use:

1. Use armrest height extenders This is the most direct and cost-effective solution. By installing height extenders on the existing armrests, the height of the armrests can be raised to match the desktop (it is recommended that the height difference be 5-8 centimeters), thereby reducing the posture of reaching out to work and relieving fatigue in the shoulders and trapezius muscles. In terms of materials, it is advisable to prioritize a combination of a velvet surface + polyurethane slow-rebound sponge: the velvet has a soft touch, reducing skin friction; the polyurethane sponge deforms slowly under pressure, can fit the curve of the elbow, distribute pressure, and is not prone to collapse after long-term use. When installing, pay attention to whether the fixing points on the back of the height extenders are compatible with the structure of the original armrests to avoid slipping or falling off.

2. Adjust the desk height If the desk has an adjustable height design (such as electric or manual adjustment of the desk legs), the desktop height can be lowered to be level with the short armrests, allowing the arms to hang naturally with the elbows at a relaxed angle of 90ยฐ-100ยฐ. This method requires ensuring that the adjusted desktop height still complies with ergonomic standards (generally, it is recommended that the desktop height = height ร— 0.25-0.28 meters) to avoid neck extension or inconvenience in keyboard operation due to excessive lowering. If the desk cannot be adjusted, consider installing an adjustable base under the desk legs or using blocks to temporarily raise the height.

3. Replace the office chair If the height of the original chair's armrests is not adjustable and cannot be adapted with height extenders, it is necessary to replace it with a chair whose armrest height is adjustable (such as gas rod lifting, multi-gear buckle adjustment) or has a more suitable initial height. When selecting a chair, focus on the material and workmanship of the armrests: armrests made with the polyurethane foaming process have a soft surface and sufficient internal support toughness, which can meet the needs of both a comfortable touch and long-term load-bearing; some high-end models are also equipped with 4D adjustment functions (adjustable up and down, front and back, left and right, and angle), which can further adapt to different body types and usage scenarios. In addition, it is necessary to confirm whether parameters such as the seat depth and backrest curvature of the new chair meet personal needs to avoid discomfort in other parts due to local adjustments.

Precautions: Long-term use of short armrests for office work may lead to compensatory tension in the shoulder and neck muscles and even trigger cervical spondylosis. It is recommended to try height extenders or adjust the desk height first; if a chair needs to be replaced, measure the height difference between the existing desk and chair first as a reference for selection.
