White Insects on Office Chairs

Admin October 17, 2026

The white insects appearing on office chairs may be booklice, mites, clothes moth larvae, powderpost beetles, or termites, and identification requires a comprehensive assessment based on the characteristics of the insects and the environment they harm.

Common Insect Characteristics and Hazards

  1. Booklice
Approximately 1 millimeter or smaller in length, with distinct body segmentation and three pairs of legs, they are grayish-white or light brown in color. They often hide in dark, damp places such as the bottom of sofas, furniture crevices, and baseboards, feeding on mold and organic debris on paper, wood, and leather. When indoor humidity exceeds 90%, the leather surface is prone to mold, providing a food source for booklice, leading to their proliferation.

  2. Mites (Dust Mites/Flour Mites)
Smaller than booklice, they usually require a microscope for observation. They are mostly round or oval in shape with four pairs of legs. They thrive in warm, humid environments and feed on human skin flakes. The oils on the surface of leather chairs and the dust in crevices are ideal habitats for them. Mite excrement and carcasses are strong allergens, potentially causing skin itching, redness, or respiratory allergic reactions (such as asthma).

  3. Clothes Moth Larvae
They are white or light yellow in color with fine hairs covering their bodies and feed on clothing fibers (such as wool and silk). If blankets, fabric cushions, or other fabrics are stacked near leather chairs, or if the environment is damp, clothes moth larvae may migrate and hide in the crevices of the chair surface. Their damage is concentrated on the fabric surface, leaving silky burrows or debris.

  4. Powderpost Beetles
They are small and cylindrical in shape, usually white or light yellow. Both adults and larvae feed on wood. They bore small holes in furniture, damaging the wooden structure and seriously affecting the strength and lifespan of the furniture. If the office chair is made of solid wood or composite wood and is in a damp environment for a long time, be vigilant against powderpost beetle infestation.

  5. Termites (Worker Termites)
White worker termites are small in size and move quickly. They feed on wood and can damage furniture structure. They reproduce rapidly and spread quickly. If mud tunnels (muddy passages) are found or there is debris accumulation on the wood surface, a termite nest may have formed, and immediate action is required.

Core Causes and Prevention

The appearance of the above insects is closely related to damp environments and residual organic matter. It is recommended to maintain indoor ventilation and dryness (humidity controlled at 50%-60%), regularly clean the oils on the surface of leather chairs and the dust in crevices, and avoid stacking fabrics or food residues. If pest infestation has already occurred, targeted control methods should be selected based on the characteristics of the insects (such as dehumidification, vacuuming, pesticide spraying, or contacting professional pest control agencies).
