Office Chair Wheel Replacement Tutorial

Admin October 13, 2026

Here is the tutorial for replacing office chair wheels:

I. Identifying the Type and Specifications of Chair Wheels

  1. Type Identification: Invert the chair steadily and observe the connection method between the wheels and the chair legs. Snap-ring wheels have a circular groove at the top of the wheel axle and will make a 'click' sound when pressed. Threaded wheels have a visible external thread, similar to a screw structure.
  2. Specification Measurement: Use a vernier caliper to measure the diameter of the mounting hole of the original chair wheels. Common specifications are 10mm or 12mm, and it is necessary to distinguish between thread types (metric or imperial). At the same time, it is necessary to evaluate the load-bearing requirements of the chair wheels. Generally, office chairs need to be able to bear a load of 100 to 150kg.

II. Purchasing Compatible Casters

  1. Material Selection: For hard floors (wooden floors/tiles), PU material wheels must be selected. Their elastic coating can reduce the risk of scratches by 80%. For carpeted environments, nylon wheels are suitable as their hardness is 30% higher than that of PU, enabling better penetration through carpet fibers.
  2. Size Matching: Measure the diameter of the original wheels. Common specifications are 5cm (for light-duty chairs), 6cm (for medium-duty chairs), and 7.5cm (for heavy-duty chairs). The diameter of the insertion rod must strictly match the international standard of ฮฆ11mm. An error exceeding 0.2mm will result in unstable installation.
  3. Special Requirements: For families with children, it is recommended to choose wheels with braking functions. Their locking mechanism can withstand a lateral force of 50kg. For scenarios that require frequent movement, such as gaming chairs, double ball bearing wheels should be selected as their smoothness is 60% higher than that of single bearing wheels.

III. Installation Steps

  1. Removing Old Wheels:
    • Snap-ring wheels: Insert a screwdriver or flat tool into the gap between the wheel axle and the chair leg, gently pry the position of the snap ring, and pull it out vertically after hearing a 'click' sound.
    • Threaded wheels: Use a 6-inch adjustable wrench to clamp the root of the wheel axle and rotate it counterclockwise at a 45-degree angle to the ground. If it is severely rusted, a small amount of WD-40 lubricant can be sprayed first.
  2. Installing New Wheels:
    • Snap-ring wheels: Align the new wheel with the insertion hole of the chair leg and press it vertically until a 'click' sound is heard.
    • Threaded wheels: Align the new wheel with the insertion hole of the chair leg and rotate it clockwise until it is fully tightened.
  3. Testing and Acceptance: After installation, push the chair for testing. The sliding noise on a tiled floor should be lower than 45 decibels, and continuous rolling for 10 meters without jamming is considered qualified.

IV. Auxiliary Modification Plan (If the Chair Wheels Cannot Be Removed)

  1. Installing a Mobile Tray: Purchase a universal wheel tray that fits the size of the chair base and place the chair on the tray to achieve mobility. Ensure that the load-bearing capacity of the tray matches the weight of the chair.
  2. Attaching Silent Roller Stickers: Attach small roller stickers with adhesive backing (with a diameter of 2-3cm) to the bottom foot pads of the chair. This is suitable for lightweight office chairs, and the recommended load-bearing capacity should not exceed 80kg.

V. Precautions

  1. Floor Protection: For solid wood or marble floors, choose silent rollers with braking functions.
  2. Stability Check: After replacement, test the center of gravity balance when the chair is moving.
  3. Emergency Treatment of Interfaces: If the interface of the new wheel does not match, lightly sand the metal insertion rod with sandpaper or wrap the thread with Teflon tape to increase the diameter (only for temporary use, which will reduce the load-bearing capacity).
  4. Diameter Error Range: The diameter of the wheel allows an error of ยฑ0.5cm, but it is necessary to ensure that the bottom of the gas lift rod is at least 2cm above the ground after installation.
