Office Chair Wheel Replacement

Admin October 19, 2026

Replacing the wheels of an office chair does not require professional maintenance. Mastering the key steps allows you to complete the task independently. Here are the specific operations:

1. Identify the Wheel Type

Turn the chair upside down steadily and observe the connection method between the wheels and the chair legs:

  • Snap-ring wheels: There is a circular groove at the top of the wheel axle. When pressed, it will make a clicking sound. They are commonly found in plastic or metal insert rod structures.
  • Threaded wheels: The wheel axle has obvious external threads, similar to a screw structure, and needs to be removed by rotation.

2. Remove the Old Wheels

  1. Removing snap-ring wheels:
    • Insert a screwdriver or a flat tool into the gap between the wheel axle and the chair leg, and gently pry the position of the snap ring. After hearing a click, pull it out vertically.
    • If it cannot be pulled out directly, try the following methods:
      • Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap to pry the snap ring.
      • Use pliers to clamp the wheel axle rod and tap it lightly with a hammer to loosen it.
  2. Removing threaded wheels:
    • Use a 6-inch adjustable wrench to clamp the root of the wheel axle and rotate it counterclockwise at a 45-degree angle to the ground.
    • If it is severely rusted, first spray a small amount of WD-40 lubricant and wait for 5-10 minutes before operating.
    • If it still cannot be unscrewed, clamp the wheel axle tightly with pliers and then tap it, or use a rubber mallet to assist in loosening.

3. Install the New Wheels

  1. Installing snap-ring wheels:
    • Align the new wheel with the insert hole of the chair leg and press it vertically until you hear a click to confirm that the snap ring is fixed.
  2. Installing threaded wheels:
    • Align the new wheel with the insert hole of the chair leg and rotate it clockwise until it is completely tightened.
    • If installation is difficult, try adjusting the angle multiple times or use rubber gloves to increase friction.

4. Testing and Adjustment

  1. Function testing:
    • Push the chair to slide on a tiled floor. The noise should be lower than 45 decibels, and continuous rolling for 10 meters without jamming is considered qualified.
  2. Interface adaptation treatment:
    • If the insert rod does not match the chair leg, you can lightly sand the surface of the metal insert rod with sandpaper.
    • When the diameter of the threaded wheel is insufficient, you can wrap the threads with Teflon tape to increase the diameter (only for temporary use).

Precautions

  1. Material selection:
    • For hard floors (wooden floors/tiles), prioritize PU wheels to reduce scratches.
    • For carpeted environments, choose nylon wheels for stronger penetration.
  2. Size matching:
    • Use a vernier caliper to measure the diameter of the original wheel (common specifications are 5cm, 6cm, and 7.5cm).
    • The diameter of the insert rod must strictly match the international standard of ฮฆ11mm to avoid looseness or jamming.
  3. Safe operation:
    • Lay a soft cloth on the ground to prevent deformation of the chair legs or scratches on the floor.
    • Avoid excessive force during disassembly to prevent the wheel axle from breaking or the chair leg from cracking.
