Office Chair Wheel Removal Methods

Admin October 09, 2026

There are mainly three methods for removing office chair wheels, and you can choose the appropriate one based on the actual situation:

Method 1: Direct Pull-out Method (Suitable for regularly installed wheels)

Turn over the five-star base of the office chair so that the wheels face upwards. Press down firmly on the center of the base with one hand and grasp the root of the wheel with the other hand, then pull upwards vertically with force. Due to the tolerance in the tightness of the parts during mold production, if the wheel is tight, you need to increase the force while ensuring safety (such as wearing gloves to prevent scratches). Repeat this operation for each wheel to complete the removal of all wheels. This method is suitable for most ordinary office chair wheels. It is simple and straightforward, but you need to ensure that the force is applied vertically to the base to avoid deforming the base by applying lateral force.

Method 2: Reverse Rotation Pull-out Method (Suitable for wheels with a snap ring structure)

Lay the chair down as a whole so that the wheels are exposed facing upwards. Observe the connection between the wheel and the base. If you find that a snap ring is inserted into the hole of the base at the root of the wheel (some wheels are fixed with a snap ring), you need to rotate the wheel in the opposite direction of the snap ring (usually counterclockwise) while pulling it outwards. The rotation and pull-out actions should be carried out simultaneously to overcome the fixing force of the snap ring. Pay attention to applying force evenly during the operation to avoid breaking the snap ring or damaging the hole in the base due to sudden force. This method is suitable for wheels with a mechanical fixing structure. After removal, check whether the snap ring is intact for subsequent installation or replacement.

Method 3: Tool-assisted Prying Method (Suitable for damaged or stuck wheels)

If the wheel cannot be pulled out directly due to aging, deformation, or internal structural damage, you need to use a tool for assistance. Prepare a pair of needle-nose pliers and clamp the metal or plastic part at the connection between the wheel and the base. Find a stable fulcrum (such as the edge of the wheel or the gap at the connection) and pry outwards slowly. You can cooperate with a counterclockwise rotation action while prying to gradually separate the wheel from the base. If the axle of the wheel is separated from the plastic part and only the axle is still connected to the chair, clamp the upper part of the ring at the root of the axle with the needle-nose pliers and continue to pry with the ring as the fulcrum until the axle is completely detached from the base. This method requires controlling the force to avoid damaging the hole in the base or leaving metal debris.

Precautions: It is recommended to wear protective gloves before removal to prevent hand scratches. If the wheel is severely stuck, you can first spray a lubricant (such as WD-40) on the connection and wait for 5-10 minutes before operating. After removal, check whether there is any foreign matter left in the hole of the base to ensure smooth subsequent installation.
