Office Chair Wheel Installation

Admin October 10, 2026

The installation of office chair wheels requires selecting the appropriate method based on the wheel type. The common types are snap-ring and threaded models, with the specific steps outlined below:

I. Identifying the Wheel Type Before installation, it is crucial to determine the type of the old wheels, as this dictates the choice of tools and the method of operation.

  • Snap-ring Type: The connection between the wheel and the chair leg features a circular disc shape, typically secured by a snap fastener. To remove it, a tool is needed to pry open the snap ring.
  • Threaded Type: The connection has a hexagonal shape, similar to a screw structure, requiring rotation for both removal and installation.

II. Removing the Old Wheels Select the appropriate tool based on the wheel type:

  • Snap-ring Type: Insert a screwdriver (either flat-head or Phillips) into the gap between the wheel and the chair leg, gently pry open the snap ring, and pull out the old wheel once the fastener is loose. Maintain even pressure during operation to avoid damaging the chair leg or the wheel due to excessive force.
  • Threaded Type: Use a wrench (preferably an adjustable open-end wrench) to secure the hexagonal part of the wheel connection and turn it counterclockwise to unscrew the old wheel. If the wheel is rusty or stuck, a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) can be sprayed to aid in removal.

III. Installing the New Wheels

  • Snap-ring Type: Align the snap fastener of the new wheel with the socket on the chair leg and press firmly until a clicking sound is heard, indicating that the snap ring is securely in place. After installation, gently shake the wheel to confirm there is no looseness.
  • Threaded Type: Align the threaded part of the new wheel with the hole on the chair leg and tighten it clockwise with a wrench. Be mindful of controlling the force to avoid over-tightening, which could cause the threads to strip or the chair leg to crack.

IV. Handling Special Cases Some office chairs are designed to have the wheels installed first, followed by assembly. In this case, the five wheels need to be installed onto the five-star base before connecting it to the chair body. Such chairs usually have dedicated slots or threads at the connection points between the wheels and the five-star base. The operation method is the same as the steps above, but it is important to keep the five-star base balanced to avoid tilting, which could lead to misalignment of the wheel installation.

V. Precautions

  • It is recommended to wear gloves during operation to prevent the tools from scratching your fingers.
  • If the fit between the wheel and the chair leg is poor (such as a hole that is too large or threads that do not match), replace the wheel with the corresponding specification. Forcing installation could lead to the wheel coming loose during use.
  • If you are unsure about the operation steps, search for the brand's official video tutorials or contact after-sales support for assistance to avoid damaging the chair due to incorrect operation.
