Office Chair Wheel Hub Removal
Admin October 09, 2026
The removal of the office chair wheel hub (caster) requires selecting the appropriate method based on the type of fixing structure. Common types and operational steps are as follows:

I. Snap Ring Wheels (No Screw Fixing)
- Tool Preparation: Needle-nose pliers, rubber mallet (optional), plastic pry bar (optional).
- Operational Steps:
- Flip the chair smoothly, ensuring the five-star base faces upwards and is placed stably to avoid tipping during operation.
- Use needle-nose pliers to grip the metal bushing or plastic piece connecting the top of the wheel to the base of the five-star base. With the edge of the five-star base as a fulcrum, pry and rotate the wheel counterclockwise simultaneously (this is the key action).
- If the external plastic sleeve of the wheel separates from the internal metal shaft, adjust the point of force (such as the upper part of the metal ring) and repeat prying and rotating until the shaft is completely removed.
- If the wheel is too tight, gently tap the side or connection of the wheel with a rubber mallet, or drip a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to assist in loosening.
II. Screw-Mounted Wheels (Screw Fixing)
- Tool Preparation: Phillips screwdriver, plastic pry bar (if the screw is covered by a plastic cap).
- Operational Steps:
- Flip the chair so that the five-star base faces upwards and observe the central structure of the wheel.
- If the screw is covered by a plastic cap, carefully pry open the cap with a plastic pry bar or scissors, avoiding damage to the surface.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the central screw counterclockwise, ensuring even force to prevent slipping.
- After the screw is removed, hold the wheel vertically and pull it upwards; if it remains tight, gently shake it left and right to assist in removal, avoiding forceful pulling.
III. General Precautions
- Safety Protection: Wear anti-scratch gloves during operation to avoid cuts from metal or plastic edges; place cardboard or a soft mat on the ground to prevent damage to the floor from falling parts.
- Environment Preparation: Choose a spacious, well-lit space and move fragile items and clutter away to ensure operational safety.
- Emergency Handling:
- If the wheel is stuck, check if hair or fibers are entangled around the bearing and remove them with tweezers; if it remains tight, tap it to vibrate or drip lubricant.
- If the plastic wheel breaks during removal and the metal shaft remains in the hole, do not use brute force to pry it out; it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling.
IV. Professional Recommendations
- Regular Maintenance: Clean the casters and lubricate the bearings monthly (using specialized lubricant for office equipment) to extend their service life.
- Usage Specifications: Avoid placing heavy objects on the casters or dragging them frequently to prevent bearing deformation or wheel damage.
The above methods cover mainstream fixing structures. Before operation, confirm the type of wheel and proceed with caution according to the steps.
