What to Do If Your Office Chair Gets Wet

Admin October 08, 2026

If your office chair gets wet, follow these steps to ensure safety and minimize damage risks:

1. Cut Off Power to Prevent Short Circuits
If your office chair has electric functions (such as height adjustment or massage), immediately disconnect the power cord or unplug the charger. Water exposure to circuits can cause short circuits, leading to electric shocks or equipment damage. This step is the top safety priority.

2. Remove Surface and Internal Moisture

  • Surface Treatment: Invert the seat to drain water, and use a dry cloth or highly absorbent paper towels to soak up visible water on the surface. If there is a lot of water, use a hairdryer (on medium-low heat) or a dehydrator to assist in drying, avoiding high temperatures that can damage materials.
  • Internal Treatment: If water has penetrated inside (such as at hardware joints or gas rod connections), disassemble the screws for cleaning. If water accumulates in the gas rod for more than 2 hours, it is prone to rusting; use the cool air setting of a hairdryer to dry the gaps. If the water level exceeds the adjustment buttons, the internal springs may absorb water; remove the outer cover of the gas rod and use cotton swabs dipped in alcohol to wipe the metal contacts to prevent oxidation.

3. Thorough Cleaning and Disinfection

  • Fabric Cleaning: Use a disinfectant cleaner to remove and wash the chair cover or fabric parts, avoiding strongly corrosive cleaners.
  • Internal Drying: If the interior of the chair is damp (such as the foam or filling), disassemble the seat and backrest and dry them in a well-ventilated area, ensuring complete dryness before reassembling to prevent mold growth.

4. Address Deformation Issues
If deformation occurs after water exposure (such as a bent backrest or collapsed seat cushion), use the following methods for repair:

  • Plywood Fixation: Use plywood and a dry towel to clamp the deformed area and straighten it to restore its shape.
  • Hot Towel Heating: Apply a hot towel (not too hot) to the deformed area and use the principle of thermal expansion and contraction to assist in restoration.

5. Drying Test and Function Check

  • Ventilation and Drying: Avoid direct sunlight (which can age plastic parts) and ventilate for 36-48 hours until completely dry.
  • Function Testing: After reassembling, test functions such as height adjustment and rotation for smoothness, stop using immediately if there is any stuttering, and contact a professional for repair.

Preventive Measures
To reduce the risk of water exposure in daily use:

  • Place wool mats under the chair legs to minimize contact with water on the floor.
  • Avoid using in damp environments (such as on wet floors or near bathrooms).
  • Choose waterproof seat cushions or chair covers and regularly check the sealing of electric components.

By following these steps, you can effectively address water exposure issues in office chairs, extend their lifespan, and ensure safe use.
