Office Chair Welding Repair Methods
Admin October 11, 2026
If the welding on an office chair has come apart, you can choose the following repair methods based on the extent of the damage:

1. Use metal AB glue for bonding (suitable for small areas of de-welding)
- Cleaning: Use sandpaper or a wire brush to remove rust, old paint, and impurities from the de-welded area, exposing the original metal color. Wipe the surface with alcohol or acetone to ensure it is dry and free of oil.
- Glue preparation: Mix the A and B tubes of metal AB glue in a 1:1 ratio and stir evenly until the color is consistent.
- Application and fixation: Use a toothpick or a small brush to evenly apply the glue to the crack and its edges, ensuring it penetrates the gap. Align and press the cracked parts together, and fix them with clamps or heavy objects for 20 minutes until they are initially set.
- Curing and sanding: After releasing the fixation, place the chair in a cool, ventilated place for 24 hours to fully cure. Sand the overflowing glue with 240-grit sandpaper until it is smooth. For small edge cracks, you can switch to metal quick-drying glue, which can quickly position in just a few seconds. However, note that its load-bearing capacity is weak and it is only suitable for non-load-bearing parts.
2. Use bolts for fixation (suitable for more severe de-welding)
- Drilling and installation: Drill holes on both sides of the de-welded area. Choose bolts (such as M4 or M5) that match the thickness of the plate, pass them through both parts, and tighten them with nuts.
- Load-bearing and aesthetic considerations: Bolt fixation has strong load-bearing capacity but will damage the aesthetic appearance of the chair surface, making it suitable for scenarios with low aesthetic requirements.
- Distributed pressure design: If the de-welded area is long, you can drill and install multiple bolts at intervals to distribute local pressure and improve repair stability.
3. Metal connecting plate reinforcement method (suitable for fracture repair)
- Initial bonding: First, bond the fractured area with AB glue or casting glue and wait for it to cure to form a basic connection.
- Install the connecting plate: Cover the fractured area with a stainless steel connecting plate and fix it with M5 flat-head screws by drilling holes. Holes need to be drilled on both sides to distribute pressure.
- Auxiliary reinforcement: Bind the connecting plate and the chair body with stainless steel straps to further enhance structural stability, suitable for repairing load-bearing key parts.
4. Clamp-assisted repair (suitable for special structures)
- Applicable scenarios: For chairs with complex structures such as folding stools and rotating stools, clamps are needed for temporary fixation or to assist other repair methods after de-welding.
- Operation points: Choose clamps (such as G-clamps) that match the curvature of the chair body and fix them on both sides of the fracture, maintaining even pressure. Continue to fix for several hours until the glue or bolts are initially stable.
Precautions:
- If the de-welded area is located at load-bearing key parts such as the gas rod or five-star base, or if the fracture is severe (such as complete separation), you must seek professional welding services to avoid high-temperature damage to the gas rod or structural instability caused by non-professional operations.
- After repair, avoid immediate loading. Wait until the glue or welding is fully cured before use. Regularly inspect the repaired area to prevent secondary cracking.
