Uneven Sitting on Office Chairs

Admin October 16, 2026

If an office chair sits unevenly, you can make it level using the following methods based on the type of chair legs and the cause of the unevenness:

Adjust the Leg Positions

Most office chairs with adjustable legs have metal adjustment rods at the bottom of the legs. After locating the adjustment rod, you can fine-tune the height of the chair legs by turning it, quickly achieving a stable state for the chair. This method is simple to operate and suitable for most office chairs with adjustable legs, resolving the issue of an uneven chair in a short time.

Use Appropriate Gaskets

If the chair has no adjustment function and is uneven due to one leg being slightly shorter, you can cut a hard gasket of the same size as the bottom of the chair leg, such as a thick rubber pad or hard plastic sheet, and place it under the shorter leg. Be careful to avoid using soft fabrics, cotton, or other easily deformable items, as they cannot provide stable support and may cause the chair to become unbalanced again.

Repair or Replace Components

  • Chair Leg Issues: If the chair legs are deformed or the structure is loose, for wooden chair legs, you can replace them with new wooden legs of the same specifications and tighten them with screws or fix them with glue; for deformed metal chair legs, you can straighten them and then tighten the screws. If the connection part at the base is loose, tighten the corresponding screws.
  • Wheel Issues: Check if the wheels are uneven when the chair is placed upright and upside down. If one of the wheel feet that can rotate vertically and horizontally at the bottom of the chair is bent or deformed, the chair will tilt in that direction. Place the chair upright, ensure that each wheel foot is in contact with the ground, and then turn it upside down to check for signs of damage on the wheel feet. If damaged wheels are found, it is recommended to purchase a new set of matching wheels for a complete replacement, as it is difficult to buy a single replacement wheel foot. You can contact the chair manufacturer for the model number to place an order or remove the old wheels and take one to an office supplies store to find a matching replacement set, paying special attention to matching the shape and size of the wheel axles.

Temporary Emergency Measures

In case of an emergency, you can also use tightened mineral water bottle caps or thick cardboard cut into pieces and compacted, and place them under the uneven chair legs for a quick emergency adjustment to make the chair stable.

Other Situations

If the chair is uneven due to damage during transportation, you can gently press it down, and it may naturally become level.
