Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

An office chair is a chair equipped for the convenience of work in daily work and social activities. Broadly, it includes all chairs used in offices, and narrowly, it refers to the backrest chairs used for desk work in a sitting position.

I. Classification and Functions
Office chairs can be classified into regular office chairs and swivel office chairs based on their functions. Swivel office chairs are equipped with rotation and height adjustment functions and belong to the category of office supplies, including series such as executive chairs, mid-back chairs, and staff chairs. Executive chairs feature a high-back structure and come standard with armrests, suitable for management use; staff chairs have a low-back and no-armrest design to meet the needs of ordinary staff. Their core components include a seat cushion, backrest, five-star base, casters, and a pneumatic height adjustment system. The height is adjusted via a pneumatic rod, and rotation buffering and movement locking are achieved using elastic supports and rollers. Some high-end products integrate pressure sensors, health monitoring, and app control functions, aligning with the trend of intelligence.

II. History and Development
The earliest prototype of an office chair can be traced back to the forward-tilting wooden chairs of ancient Egypt around 1900 BC. In 1849, Thomas Warren invented the first modern office chair in history, featuring rotation, sliding, and an elastic soft seat surface. Since 2000, China's office chair industry has developed through the OEM model, with Anji County in Zhejiang Province becoming a global production base. In 2024, China's office chair production reached 177 million units, with exports of 84.64 million units. It is expected that the market size for hydraulic lift swivel chairs will exceed 16 billion yuan by 2025.

III. Quality, Safety, and Standards
Quality and safety issues of office chairs have attracted significant attention. In March 2023, the United States and Canada recalled office chairs made in China due to the risk of backrest breakage, involving 12 reports and 10 injuries. In September 2024, China's State Administration for Market Regulation found 15 batches of non-compliant products during inspections, with stability issues being prominent. In January 2025, the United States recalled WorkPro Momentum office chairs due to the risk of bolt failure, resulting in 7 reports and 2 minor injuries. These incidents highlight the importance of quality supervision.

IV. Price Range
The prices of office chairs vary significantly depending on their style and function. For example, a basic computer chair costs approximately 368.55 yuan, a custom breathable mesh adjustable office chair costs around 252.0 yuan, and a high-end reclining swivel chair costs about 477.31 yuan. Consumers can choose the appropriate product based on their needs.
