Office Chair Tilt Repair

Admin October 19, 2026

The repair of an office chair's tilt should be carried out according to the specific cause, and the common repair steps are as follows:

1. Check the contact between the wheels and the ground

  • Ground flatness: Place the chair upright and upside down, and observe whether all the wheels touch the ground simultaneously. If the ground is uneven and causes the tilt, use anti-slip rubber pads to elevate the shorter legs or adjust the adjustable feet to the same height.
  • Wheel foot condition: Check if the wheel feet are bent, deformed, or broken (common due to long-term wear or manufacturing defects). If the wheel feet are damaged, you need to purchase a complete set of wheels that match the original chair for replacement. Replacing a single wheel foot alone is difficult.

2. Replace or repair the gas lift

  • Gas lift failure: The aging, air leakage, or breakage of the gas lift is the primary cause of left-right tilt. To repair it, first remove the chair base, use a rubber mallet to gently tap and dislodge the old gas lift. When installing the new gas lift, avoid direct tapping to prevent damage to the internal structure.
  • Safety tip: If there is high-pressure gas inside the gas lift, confirm that it has been fully depressurized before operation, or contact a professional repair technician for handling.

3. Tighten the connecting parts

  • Loose screws: Check if the screws in the connecting parts such as the armrests and the base are loose. Use a screwdriver to turn the screws counterclockwise to loosen them, add a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40), and then turn them clockwise to tighten them firmly.
  • Worn screw holes: If the screw holes are worn due to long-term use, use a toothpick to dip a small amount of white glue to fill the holes. After the glue dries, reinstall the screws to enhance the fixing effect.

4. Adjust the length of the chair legs

  • Worn chair legs: If the chair legs have different lengths due to wear or manufacturing errors, use an angle grinder or sandpaper to sand the longer chair legs, or elevate the shorter chair legs so that all four legs are on the same plane. During testing, use a thin rope to stretch diagonally and observe if the chair is stable.

5. Replace the foot pads or repair the frame

  • Worn foot pads: Worn rubber or plastic foot pads will cause the metal chair legs to directly contact the ground and slip. Replace them with new foot pads in a timely manner.
  • Loose frame: If the mortise-and-tenon structure of a wooden chair is loose, reinforce the tenons or repair the broken parts. If the metal frame is deformed, use a hydraulic press to adjust it back to its original shape.

6. Test and verify

  • Upside-down test: After installing new wheels or making adjustments, place the chair upside down on a flat ground and observe if it is stable. If it is still tilted, further check if the seat plate or the base is broken, and replace the damaged parts if necessary.

Safety tip: If it involves an electric lifting chair, a high-pressure gas lift structure, or complex mechanical parts, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling to avoid safety hazards caused by self-operation.
