Office Chair Tension Adjustment

Admin October 09, 2026

The issue of office chair tension can be resolved by adjusting the recline spring, backrest tension, or implementing temporary/long-term solutions. Here are the specific methods:

1. Recline Spring Tension Adjustment

The tension of the recline spring in an office chair can be manually controlled via the adjustment knob located at the base. Turning the knob clockwise tightens the spring, increasing the recline resistance, which is suitable for users with a larger build or those requiring stronger support. Turning it counterclockwise loosens the spring, making the backrest recline more easily, suitable for users with a lighter build or those who prefer a more flexible recline. When adjusting, maintain a seated position and slowly test the recline range to avoid imbalance due to sudden changes in resistance.

2. Backrest Tension Adjustment

The tension of most office chair backrests is controlled by a circular knob or toggle at the bottom. Rotate the knob counterclockwise or push the toggle to the maximum resistance setting, then sit back and test the tension, adjusting repeatedly until comfortable. If the chair structure allows for finer adjustments (e.g., the backrest adjustment knob is located beneath the seat or on the side brackets), use a hex wrench to turn it 3-5 times clockwise to test the tension. After each adjustment, retest the seated position to avoid over-tightening, which can make reclining difficult, or loosening, which can lead to insufficient support.

3. Temporary Emergency Measures

If the screws are tightened to the limit but the chair remains loose, the following methods can be used for temporary fixation:

  1. Fill with hard materials: Insert books, hard plastic sheets, or cut old mouse pads into 30cm strips, stack them in multiple layers, and secure them with double-sided tape at the corner between the backrest and seat to increase structural stability.
  2. Fill with soft items: If no tools are available, place a U-shaped pillow vertically against the lower back to fill the gap, or roll a towel into a cylindrical shape and insert it into the backrest gap to alleviate the issue of a floating lower back caused by looseness.

4. Long-term Solutions

  1. Replace the gas lift: If the gas lift makes noise during height adjustment, replace it with a gas cylinder certified by TUV or SGS to avoid safety hazards caused by aging or quality defects.
  2. Repair or replace accessories: If the plastic buckle on the backrest is broken, it can be temporarily fixed with AB glue, but it is recommended to purchase original replacement parts. For chairs over five years old, the gas lift or damper is prone to aging. Purchasing matching models online for replacement costs about 40-80 yuan and can significantly improve the user experience.

When adjusting, be mindful of the force applied to avoid damaging the parts due to over-tightening. If the issue persists or involves structural damage, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling.
