Yellowing of Office Chairs Due to Sweat Stains
Admin October 09, 2026
Targeted cleaning methods can be used for yellowing of office chairs due to sweat stains based on different materials, as follows:

Fabric Material
- Basic Cleaning: Dilute a mild laundry detergent with warm water in a ratio of 1:10 to create a weak solution. Dip a soft-bristled brush into the solution and gently scrub the yellowed areas. Avoid applying excessive force to prevent damage to the fabric fibers.
- Deep Stain Removal: If the yellow stains are stubborn, mix the laundry detergent or color-safe bleach with warm water according to the instructions on the product label. Gently scrub the stained areas with a soft-bristled brush. After scrubbing, let it sit for 15 minutes to allow the cleaning agents to fully break down the proteins and oils in the sweat stains. Then, clean it in the usual way.
- Drying Treatment: After cleaning, the fabric should be air-dried in the shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause the fabric to fade or become stiff. If the yellowing is caused by sweat or oil stains, before cleaning, you can first make a paste with baking soda and water and apply it to the stained areas. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush and clean according to the above steps. The weak alkalinity of baking soda can neutralize the acidic sweat stains and enhance the stain-removing effect.
Plastic Material
- Daily Cleaning: Mix white vinegar with warm water in a ratio of 1:1. Dip a soft cloth into the solution and repeatedly wipe the chair surface. The acidity of white vinegar can dissolve the salt and oils in the sweat stains.
- Stubborn Stain Treatment: If the yellow stains are difficult to remove, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on the stained areas and add a small amount of water to make a paste. Apply it to the surface and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then, wipe it with a soft cloth. The mild abrasiveness of baking soda can help remove deep-seated dirt.
- Residue Rinsing: Wipe the chair surface with clean water 2 - 3 times to ensure there is no cleaning agent residue. This prevents the plastic surface from aging faster due to chemical residue.
Leather Material
- Surface Dirt Removal: First, use a mild leather cleaner (or diluted unscented body wash if not available) to wipe the chair surface and remove surface dust and sweat stain residues.
- Targeted Yellow Stain Treatment: Mix citric acid with water in a ratio of 1:5. Dip a soft cloth into the solution and gently wipe the yellow-stained areas. The acidity of citric acid can break down the proteins in the sweat stains, but avoid prolonged contact to prevent corrosion of the leather.
- Residue Removal and Care: Wipe off the citric acid solution with a damp cloth to ensure there is no residue. Then, apply a small amount of leather conditioner to restore the surface luster and form a protective film to prevent sweat stains from penetrating again.
