Office Chair Spring Protrusion
Admin October 09, 2026
Office chair spring protrusion may pose health risks and requires prompt countermeasures.

Health Risks
- Urinary System Impact: When springs deform and protrude, sitting down causes a single-point hard pressure on the perineal area, continuously stimulating the pelvic floor. Although this stimulation is not painful, it gradually alters urine storage perception, leading to increased bladder sensitivity. For example, after sitting for an hour, one may repeatedly feel the urge to urinate, and the symptoms usually subside after changing seats. This is also the key reason why some men experience spontaneous improvement in frequent urination after changing workstations or vehicles.
- Physical Injury Risk: Protruding springs may directly scratch the skin or soft tissues. There have been reports of severe cuts to the buttocks or thighs caused by protruding springs, requiring medical intervention. Such injuries are often caused by broken springs or exposed metal parts after the fabric is damaged.
Countermeasures
- Regular Inspection and Maintenance: Inspect office chairs and vehicle seats every 3-6 months, focusing on whether springs are protruding or fabrics are sagging. If deformation is found, immediately add a flat cushion (such as a high-density foam cushion) to fill in the unevenๅๅ้ข (pressure-bearing surface) and avoid concentrated single-point pressure.
- Adjust Sitting Posture Habits: Actively adjust your posture when sitting down, shifting the pressure point to the gluteal maximus area and avoiding the perineal and pelvic floor regions. This can be achieved by straightening your back and distributing leg pressure, reducing local continuous stimulation.
- Choose Appropriate Cushions: Prioritize cushions that are high-density, flat, and supportive (such as memory foam or gel materials). Their flat surface effectively disperses pressure, eliminating single-point pressure. Avoid using overly soft or uneven cushions that may exacerbate deformation.
- Replace Aging Seats Promptly: Seats used for more than 5 years are prone to deformation due to material aging, and even adding cushions may not completely eliminate the stimulation. It is recommended to replace old seats with new ones that have a stable spring structure and durable fabric to reduce health risks.
By implementing these measures, the potential health risks associated with spring protrusion can be significantly reduced, while also extending the lifespan of the seats. If symptoms such as frequent urination or pain have already occurred, seek medical attention promptly to rule out other causes.
