Office Chair Sitting Position Too Low

Admin October 12, 2026

A low sitting position on an office chair can lead to increased lumbar spine pressure, muscle imbalance, and other issues, which require adjusting the seat height or taking remedial measures to improve. Here is a detailed analysis:

I. Hazards of a Low Sitting Position

  1. Surge in Lumbar Spine Pressure: When the knees are higher than the hips, the lumbar spine is forced to bend into an arc shape. The anterior edge of the intervertebral disc is compressed, and the posterior edge is stretched. Over the long term, this can lead to intervertebral disc degeneration, stiffness, and soreness in the lower back.
  2. Compensatory Thoracic Spine Curvature: To maintain a horizontal field of vision, the upper body leans forward, causing the thoracic spine to curve. At this time, the posterior structures of the lumbar spine (such as joint capsules and ligaments) need to bear greater tension, which can easily trigger muscle imbalance and postural memory.
  3. Increased Mechanical Burden: When the torso leans forward, the moment arm becomes longer, and the posterior structures of the lumbar spine need to share more pressure. Muscles, ligaments, and joint capsules are continuously under load, which may induce chronic lower back pain.

II. Improvement Methods

  1. Adjust the Seat Height: Prioritize adjusting the seat to a position where both feet are flat on the ground and the thighs are parallel to the ground, ensuring that the knees and hips are level.
  2. Remedial Measures When the Chair Cannot Be Raised:
    • Modern Adjustable Chairs: If the pneumatic rod fails, replace it with a new one. In an emergency, a PPR pipe can be placed over the pneumatic rod for temporary fixation (ensure that the pipe diameter matches and is secure).
    • Non-adjustable Chairs (such as wooden chairs and dining chairs): Use chair leg heightening pads (such as rubber pads or wooden blocks), or make your own heightening objects (such as stacked books or wooden planks). If possible, directly replace the chair with an adjustable-height one.
  3. Adjust in Conjunction with the Monitor: After adjusting the seat, synchronously adjust the monitor height so that the line of sight is level with the center of the screen, avoiding looking down or up, and further reducing spinal pressure.

III. Post-adjustment Precautions
Maintain a natural upright back, avoiding rounding the shoulders or excessive backward leaning. Get up and move around every 30-60 minutes to relieve muscle fatigue. If lower back discomfort has already occurred, seek medical attention promptly and cooperate with rehabilitation training.
