Office Chair Sinking Repair Methods

Admin October 09, 2026

The repair methods for an office chair sinking need to be selected based on the specific cause. Here are common situations and their handling methods:

I. Sinking due to problems with the lifting chair's pneumatic rod

If the chair cannot maintain its height, it may be due to a seal failure or insufficient internal pressure in the pneumatic rod.

  • Repair with a hose clamp:
  1. Lay the chair on its side or upside down. Use a screwdriver to remove the base clip, wheels, and skirt, and then reattach the wheels.
  2. Adjust the chair to a height where the seat is level with your knees when standing. Wrap a hose clamp around the cylinder (do not tighten it yet).
  3. Wrap rubber bands, tape around the cylinder, or sand it (if the cylinder is greasy, clean it first) to increase friction.
  4. Tighten the hose clamp and secure the screws. Test the height. If the clamp slips, reinforce it with a rubber strip or switch to a PVC pipe.
  • Repair with a PVC pipe:
  1. Measure the diameter of the cylinder and its length at the perfect height. Purchase a PVC pipe with the same or a slightly larger diameter (e.g., 1.5 inches).
  2. Secure the pipe with a vise and cut it lengthwise from one side (wear a mask to prevent dust). Alternatively, slide in an uncut pipe directly.
  3. Place the cut side around the cylinder and secure the chair to prevent it from slipping.

II. Seat cushion sinking

Choose different methods according to the degree of sinking:

  • Mild sinking (local sinking < 1 cm):
  1. Patting and kneading: Gently pat the sunken area to promote the fluffiness of the filling.
  2. Adjusting the mesh fabric: Tighten the screws of the mesh fabric's retaining straps or re-tension the straps (applicable to mesh fabric seat cushions).
  3. Adding support: Place a wooden board or cardboard under the seat cushion to enhance overall support.
  4. Drying and ventilating: If the cushion is deformed due to moisture, move it to a well-ventilated area to dry (avoid direct sunlight).
  5. Re-filling: Open the outer layer of the seat cushion, add professional filling material or new sponge, and then seal it.
  • Moderate sinking (sinking of 1-2 cm, loose mesh fabric without damage): Contact after-sales service for mesh fabric replacement within the warranty period. If the warranty has expired, you can purchase the same-sized mesh fabric yourself (e.g., Longwen Te mesh for 100-200 yuan, U-mesh fabric for 200-300 yuan) for replacement, or pay a third party for repair.
  • Severe sinking (sinking > 2 cm, damaged mesh fabric/loose frame): It is not recommended to repair. It is more cost-effective to replace the chair with a new one, especially when accompanied by a loss of lumbar support or damage to the adjustment function.

III. Sinking due to other common problems

  • Tightening loose screws: Use a screwdriver or wrench to tighten the screws on the chair legs, armrests, backrests, and other parts.
  • Repairing worn screw holes or mortise and tenon joints:
  1. Worn screw holes: Insert toothpicks or thin wooden sticks dipped in white glue, break off the excess parts, and screw in the screws after they dry.
  2. Loose mortise and tenon joints: Clean off the old glue and debris, apply new white glue, and then knock the tenon back in. Secure it with a rope or clamp for 24 hours.
  • Adding corner braces to strengthen the structure: Reinforce the connection between the chair legs and cross braces with straight corner braces and secure the corners with screws.
