Service Life of Office Chairs

Admin October 08, 2026

The depreciation or service life of office chairs needs to be determined based on the usage scenario and regulations. In corporate tax treatment, the minimum depreciation period is 5 years, while for office tables and chairs in administrative institutions, the minimum service life is 15 years. The actual service life varies depending on the material.

Corporate Tax Treatment Scenario

According to the "Regulations on the Implementation of the Enterprise Income Tax Law", the minimum depreciation period for office furniture (including office chairs) is 5 years. This regulation has been in effect since 2008 and remains unchanged to this day. It applies to the determination of the depreciation period for fixed assets such as office chairs when enterprises conduct tax treatment. During corporate accounting treatment, to avoid differences between tax and accounting, it is recommended to prioritize the 5-year period specified by tax law. However, specific operations should be based on the official documents at the time of purchase. If an enterprise is unsure about the relevant period regulations, it can consult the local tax department for accurate information.

Administrative Institution Scenario

In administrative institutions, the Ministry of Finance stipulates that the minimum service life for office tables and chairs is 15 years. Here, office tables and chairs include office chairs. This regulation provides a clear reference standard for administrative institutions in asset management and usage.

Actual Service Life Situation

The actual service life of office chairs made of different materials varies. If well-maintained, solid wood chairs can be used for more than ten years; mesh chairs usually have a service life of 5 - 7 years; plastic chairs may need to be replaced in less than 5 years due to aging issues. In addition, high-end ergonomic chairs from well-known brands can last for 10 - 15 years under normal use and maintenance. However, even in this case, in corporate tax treatment, their statutory depreciation period is still 5 years. This is because the depreciation period regulations in tax treatment are formulated from the perspectives of tax administration and economic accounting, and are not completely equivalent to the physical service life that office chairs can actually achieve.
