Office Chair Safety Compliance

Admin October 22, 2026

Office chairs must meet the following core requirements for safety compliance:

I. Safety Standards and Compliance

Office chairs in China must adhere to the standard QB/T 2280 - 2016 Office Furniture - Office Chairs. Updated in 2025, the standard strengthens anti-slip, anti-tip, and anti-pinch designs, and enhances specifications for the use of eco-friendly materials (e.g., limiting the release of harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde and benzene, in compliance with GB 18587 - 2017). The EU's EN 1335 - 2 standard specifies requirements for structural stability and the safety threshold of gas springs, with domestically compliant products required to meet equivalent indicators.

II. Safety Requirements for Key Components

  1. Gas Springs: Nitrogen purity must exceed 90%, and tube wall thickness must meet standards to avoid explosion risks caused by poor sealing or insufficient material strength.
  2. Base: A high-quality base can cushion injuries, with some brands adding explosion-proof steel plates to enhance safety. Material stability ranking: ordinary plastic < iron < steel < aluminum alloy < carbon fiber.
  3. Chair Legs: Five-star chair legs offer the best stability, with material load-bearing capacity ranked as: aluminum alloy > stainless steel > nylon.
  4. Upholstery: Must comply with eco-friendly standards to avoid excessive emissions of harmful gases such as formaldehyde and benzene.

III. Common Safety Hazards and Risk Points

  1. Gas spring safety hazards account for 23.3% of non-compliant batches in spot checks, with issues such as base fractures, caster detachments, and insufficient backrest strength accounting for approximately 15%.
  2. The 2025 updated standard requires harmful gas emissions to comply with GB 18587 - 2017 to prevent long-term health hazards from prolonged use.

IV. Measures to Ensure Safety

  1. Purchase: Prioritize branded products with quality inspection reports and labeled compliance standards, avoiding low-priced, unbranded products.
  2. Usage: Regularly inspect for abnormal gas spring noises or loose bases, avoid frequent or vigorous height adjustments, refrain from standing on the seat or excessive reclining, and ensure the load does not exceed the product's stated maximum capacity (typically 110 - 150 kg).
  3. Regulatory Updates: Since 2025, the State Administration for Market Regulation has intensified spot checks, imposing rectification deadlines and administrative penalties on non-compliant enterprises to drive industry-wide safety standard improvements.
