Office Chair Recline Adjustment

Admin October 08, 2026

The main methods for adjusting an office chair to recline backward include unlocking the recline function, adjusting the recline tension, locking the recline angle, and restoring the upright position, as detailed below:

  1. Unlocking the Recline Function: Many mid-range and high-end office chairs use a lever system to unlock the recline function. This lever is typically located beneath the seat, near the right or left side. To operate, simply pull up or push the lever gently to release the lock, allowing the backrest to move freely. Additionally, some chairs have an unlocking handle on the right side; a gentle pull unlocks the backrest for recline operation.
  2. Adjusting the Recline Tension: For certain types of office chairs, such as ergonomic chairs, a knob is used to adjust the recline angle and tension. This knob is mostly located near the center of the seat's underside, close to the support column. When rotated clockwise, it usually increases the backrest's recline resistance, providing more support during the recline process; conversely, rotating it counterclockwise reduces resistance, making recline easier. Users can adjust the tension according to their body weight and recline preferences.
  3. Locking the Recline Angle: Some office chairs feature a recline angle locking function. One way to operate is to find the control lever on the right side of the seat cushion, pull it out, allowing the chair to recline freely. Once the desired angle is reached, gently push the lever back in to lock the chair at that angle. Other chairs require unlocking, adjusting to the desired angle, and then pulling up or pushing the lever again to lock the position, ensuring the chair does not wobble during use.
  4. Restoring the Upright Position: To restore the chair to an upright position, pull the control lever outward while giving your back a push; the chair will straighten up. Then, push the lever back in to lock the upright position, facilitating normal office use.

Additionally, when adjusting the recline function of an office chair, pay attention to balance and stability to ensure the chair's center of gravity does not shift too far backward, preventing tipping. If the office chair feels like it's about to tip over when reclining backward, it may be due to improper adjustment or issues with screw tightness, hydraulic rods, etc. In this case, diagnose the problem and perform corresponding repairs.
