Office Chair Cylinder Height Adjustment

Admin October 19, 2026

The height adjustment of an office chair cylinder is achieved by operating the pneumatic rod, utilizing the rebound force of the high-pressure nitrogen gas inside to push the seat upward. The specific operation and principles are as follows:

I. Operation Steps

  1. Locate the Control Lever
Find the control lever beneath the seat, typically on the right or left side. It is usually a single lever or button. Some designs may integrate it beneath the armrests, so the exact position should be confirmed based on the chair model.

  2. Adjust with No One Seated
Ensure that no one is seated on the chair, then pull up the control lever. At this point, the valve inside the pneumatic rod opens, and the rebound force of the high-pressure nitrogen gas directly pushes the seat upward. If the chair is heavy or the adjustment is not smooth, slightly lift your hips to reduce some of your weight, making the height adjustment smoother. Avoid forcibly adjusting the chair when someone is seated to prevent damage to the pneumatic rod due to uneven force distribution.

  3. Lock the Height
After releasing the control lever, the valve closes, and the gas pressure inside the pneumatic rod forms a balance with the piston rod, locking the seat height. Some high-end models may be equipped with infinitely variable adjustment functions, allowing for fine-tuning by continuously pressing the control lever.

II. Working Principle

The cylinder is filled with pressurized nitrogen or inert gas. When the valve opens, the gas pressure pushes the piston rod to extend, thereby changing the chair's height. There is a corresponding relationship between the internal gas pressure and the height adjustment: the higher the gas pressure, the longer the piston rod extends, and the higher the seat rises; conversely, the seat lowers. The sealing design, material strength, and corrosion resistance of the pneumatic rod are crucial for ensuring long-term stable operation. If the seal fails and gas leaks, the pneumatic rod may not adjust properly or may experience a "seat sinking" phenomenon.

III. Precautions

  1. Safety Certification
Before adjusting, ensure that the chair meets safety certification standards (such as BIFMA, EN1335, etc.) to avoid the risk of explosion caused by using inferior pneumatic rods.

  2. Usage Habits
Avoid frequent height adjustments or rough handling to prevent wear on the internal components of the pneumatic rod. If the height needs to be fixed for a long time, it is recommended to regularly check the sealing of the pneumatic rod.

  3. Maintenance Taboos
Never disassemble the pneumatic rod or inject lubricant into it by yourself, as this may damage the sealing structure, leading to gas leakage or functional failure. If the cylinder fails, contact a professional maintenance technician for replacement.
