Adjusting the Recline of an Office Chair
Admin October 10, 2026
The methods for adjusting the recline of an office chair vary depending on the adjustment system. Here are the common types and their operating steps:

I. Lever Adjustment System
- Locate the Adjustment Lever: Typically found on the right or left side beneath the seat; some chairs may require bending over to see it.
- Release the Recline Lock: If the chair has a locking function, gently pull or push the lever to release the locking mechanism.
- Adjust the Recline Angle: Slowly lean back while simultaneously operating the lever to bring the backrest to a comfortable angle, avoiding sudden force that could cause imbalance.
- Lock the Position: After adjusting to the desired angle, operate the lever again (e.g., push back or pull up) to secure the backrest position.
II. Knob Adjustment System
- Find the Adjustment Knob: Usually located near the center of the seat's underside close to the support column; some designs may be hidden and require feeling around to locate.
- Adjust the Recline Tension: Turn the knob clockwise to increase the backrest's recline resistance (suitable for heavier individuals) or counterclockwise to decrease it (suitable for lighter individuals). Fine-tune according to personal weight and office needs.
- Adjust the Recline Angle: Some chairs have a separate angle knob; refer to the product manual for operation, typically rotating to the marked position.
III. Pneumatic Adjustment System
- Locate the Pneumatic Lever: Usually integrated with the height adjustment lever; switch functions by pushing in different directions.
- Smoothly Adjust the Angle: Gently pull the lever and slowly lean back; the backrest will move smoothly to the desired angle with the pneumatic device.
IV. Executive Chair Specific Adjustment
- Pull Up the Adjuster: Find the up-and-down movable adjuster beneath the chair and pull it up to activate the recline function.
- Adjust with Synchronized Force: While pulling the adjuster, apply backward pressure to gradually tilt the backrest; do not release until reaching the appropriate angle.
- Fix the Tilt: Release the adjuster after reaching the target angle; the backrest will maintain its current position.
V. General Adjustment Steps (for some chairs)
- Unlock the Recline: Pull up the handle on the right side to allow the backrest to move freely.
- Adjust the Spring Force: Use the cylindrical knob on the base to adjust the rebound force; turn clockwise to increase support (suitable for long office hours) or counterclockwise to decrease resistance (suitable for casual reclining).
- Lock the Angle: Pull out the control lever on the right side of the seat cushion to recline, find the angle, and gently push to lock; to return to an upright position, pull out the control lever and push the backrest, then push the lever back in to secure.
Precautions:
- Ensure the chair's center of gravity is stable during adjustment to avoid tipping over from excessive recline.
- Heavier individuals should increase the recline resistance to prevent sinking; lighter individuals should decrease it for easy reclining.
- For slight recline during office work, it is advisable to have slightly higher resistance to maintain a natural support state.
