Office Chair Rebound Repair

Admin October 14, 2026

The rebound issue of office chairs can be troubleshot and repaired through the following steps:

1. Check the Adjustment Lever/Button and Locking Mechanism

First, confirm whether the adjustment lever or button under the seat operates smoothly. If there is any stuttering, inability to reset, or blocked movement, it may be due to mechanical jamming causing the rebound to fail. Also, check if the locking function has been accidentally triggered: for lever-controlled chairs, try pulling up the control lever to unlock; for cable-controlled chairs, adjust the operation switch on the base to ensure it is not in the locked state.

2. Clean and Lubricate the Adjustment Mechanism

Foreign object blockage is a common cause. Use compressed air or a small brush to clean dust, hair, or small objects from the gaps in the adjustment lever, gears, paddles, and other components. After cleaning, spray a small amount of WD-40 or a specialized lubricant on the moving parts (such as paddles and gear shafts), and repeatedly operate the adjustment lever to allow the lubricant to fully penetrate and restore mechanical flexibility.

3. Tighten Loose Screws

Check the screws at the connection points between the backrest and seat cushion, the base and the gas lift, etc., for looseness. Use a screwdriver or wrench to tighten all visible screws clockwise, paying special attention to frequently moving joints. If the screw holes are stripped, fill them with fine wire or toothpicks to increase friction and prevent further loosening.

4. Adjust the Tilt Resistance or Replace Components

If the chair has insufficient tilt force, try rotating the 'Tilt Tension' knob at the bottom counterclockwise to increase support. If adjustment is ineffective, it may be due to aging or breakage of the internal spring components, and you need to purchase springs of the corresponding model for replacement. If small components such as adjustment paddles or gears are broken, you also need to replace them with universal model parts.

5. Check the Gas Lift and Base

If the chair fails to lift or the backrest sinks as a whole, it may be due to gas leakage in the gas lift (the normal lifespan is 5-8 years). You need to replace the gas lift marked with the model number and ensure it is installed firmly. If the paddle of the tilt mechanism is jammed, remove the gas lift and check and lubricate the relevant components; if the base is damaged, replace it as a whole to avoid safety hazards.

6. Other Considerations

  • Electric Chair Malfunction: If only the backrest fails, check the single motor; if all functions fail, troubleshoot the power supply or wiring connections.
  • Temporary Solutions: You can use a cushion or a rolled-up towel to pad the lumbar support area, or use nylon cable ties to secure the backrest (long-term use may affect comfort).

Safety Tip: When dealing with the gas lift, electrical circuits, or complex disassembly, it is recommended to contact a professional for operation to avoid damage or personal injury due to improper handling.
