Electroplating in Office Chair Production

Admin October 11, 2026

The electroplating process in office chair production is primarily used for surface treatment of metal components, with the core objectives of enhancing decorative appeal, corrosion resistance, and durability. Salt spray testing is a critical step in evaluating corrosion resistance.

I. Scope of Electroplating Applications

Electroplated layers are widely applied to metal components of office chairs, including chair legs, armrest brackets, and bases. Common plating types include chromium, nickel, zinc, zinc-nickel alloy, and composite layers such as copper-nickel-chromium combinations. These layers form dense protective coatings on metal surfaces, improving aesthetics (e.g., the luster of chromium plating) while isolating components from corrosive agents like air and moisture, thereby extending service life.

II. Core Role of Salt Spray Testing

Salt spray testing is an accelerated corrosion simulation that exposes samples to harsh environments for short durations (e.g., 24-72 hours) to assess long-term corrosion resistance. Test results provide objective data for material selection, process optimization (e.g., adjusting plating thickness), and quality control. For instance, if a batch of zinc-plated chair legs shows significant rust after 48 hours of testing, issues like plating uniformity or pre-treatment processes must be investigated.

III. Equipment and Tool Requirements

  1. Salt Spray Chamber: Requires precise control of parameters such as temperature (ยฑ1ยฐC) and salt spray deposition rate (1-2 ml/80 cmยฒยทh) to ensure stable testing conditions.
  2. Auxiliary Tools: Includes electronic balances (for preparing 5% ยฑ1% sodium chloride solutions), pH meters (adjusting pH to 6.5-7.2), inert sample holders (preventing reactions with the chamber), and magnifying glasses or digital cameras (documenting corrosion phenomena).

IV. Standard Testing Procedure

  1. Sample Preparation: Clean test pieces, mark non-tested areas, and apply inert coatings to cut edges for protection.
  2. Sample Placement: Secure samples at a 15ยฐ-30ยฐ angle on holders to ensure full exposure of tested surfaces without obstruction.
  3. Solution Preparation: Use high-purity sodium chloride to prepare salt solutions, adjusting pH to neutral ranges.
  4. Test Initiation: Stabilize chamber temperature (35 ยฑ 2ยฐC), adjust spray pressure to meet deposition rate standards, and conduct tests for specified durations (e.g., 72 hours), with daily equipment checks.

By following this procedure, the corrosion resistance of electroplated layers can be systematically evaluated, providing scientific evidence for quality assurance in office chair metal components.
