Office Chair Position Adjustment

Admin October 11, 2026

Adjusting the position of an office chair can be done from four aspects: seat height, sitting posture angle, armrest height, and monitor height, to enhance comfort and reduce physical stress.

1. Seat Height
Seat height is the foundation of adjustment. Ensure that both feet can rest flat on the ground, with the thighs and lower legs forming an angle of 95 to 100 degrees. This angle allows for even distribution of body weight, preventing excessive pressure on the hips and thighs. If the chair is too high, causing the feet to dangle, a footrest can be used for support; if the chair is too low, increasing pressure on the knees, it should be adjusted higher. Another way to judge is to let the feet naturally rest on the ground, with the thighs roughly parallel to the ground, ensuring a stable center of gravity and providing a foundation for upper body posture.

2. Sitting Posture Angle
The sitting posture angle directly affects lumbar spine health. It is recommended to lean back slightly, maintaining a tilt angle of 100 to 110 degrees, allowing the back, especially the lower back, to fit snugly against the chair back. If the chair is equipped with a lumbar support, adjust it to support the natural curve of the lumbar spine, reducing lumbar pressure. Avoid maintaining an upright or overly forward-leaning posture for extended periods, as this can easily lead to fatigue in the lower back muscles.

3. Armrest Height
The height of the armrests should match the position of the arms when hanging naturally. Adjust them so that the elbows form a right angle, allowing the forearms to rest comfortably on the armrests or desktop, with the upper and lower arms forming an angle close to 100 degrees. This posture effectively relieves shoulder strain, preventing neck, shoulder, and back pain caused by prolonged tension. Additionally, ensure that the keyboard height is appropriate to avoid abnormal arm or shoulder postures due to operating equipment.

4. Monitor Height
The monitor height should be level with the line of sight. It is recommended to elevate the monitor so that the line of sight is level with the top edge of the screen, forcing the spine to stretch naturally and reducing the need to lean forward. Leaning forward increases neck pressure by three to five times, which can easily lead to cervical spine problems over time. When the seat height is appropriate, with the back straight and shoulders relaxed, the line of sight should be roughly level with the top edge of the screen, allowing the neck to maintain a healthy posture without excessive forward extension.

By systematically adjusting the various parameters of the office chair, you can significantly enhance comfort during prolonged sitting and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. It is recommended to get up and move around every hour, combined with proper sitting posture, to further protect your health.
