Office Chair Pneumatic Device

Admin October 11, 2026

The office chair pneumatic device usually refers to the pneumatic rod (pneumatic cylinder), whose core function is to adjust the seat height through the compression and release of high-pressure nitrogen gas inside. Some advanced models can adjust the tightness of the backrest's recline, but there are safety risks that require attention to maintenance.

Core Working Principle

The core of the pneumatic device is high-pressure nitrogen gas (or other inert gases) sealed inside the cylinder. When the user twists the control handle at the bottom of the chair, the internal control valve regulates the gas flow: to raise the seat, the valve opens to allow gas to flow from the lower chamber to the upper chamber, pushing the piston upward; to lower the seat, the gas flows in the opposite direction, and the piston is pressed downward by gravity or the user's weight. The change in gas pressure is converted into seat height adjustment through the displacement of the piston, and finally, stable positioning is achieved through valve locking. Some advanced models of pneumatic rods also integrate damping adjustment functions, allowing the user to control the tightness of the backrest's recline by rotating a cylindrical knob to change the flow resistance of the internal oil or gas.

Safety Risks and Accident Causes

The safety hazards of pneumatic devices mainly stem from material or gas quality issues. Low-quality pneumatic rods may use steel tubes with insufficient wall thickness. Under frequent lifting and lowering or high-temperature environments (such as direct sunlight or prolonged use), the internal gas pressure may suddenly increase, causing the cylinder to burst horizontally; if the pneumatic rod has poor sealing, rapid gas leakage can cause the rod to suddenly extend, generating high-speed impact force. There have been multiple injury accidents caused by pneumatic rod explosions in history, such as cylinder fragments flying or the seat suddenly collapsing.

Maintenance and Replacement Recommendations

To reduce risks, the following maintenance points should be noted:

  1. Purchase genuine products: Prioritize brands that have passed safety certifications (such as BIFMA standards) and avoid buying pneumatic rods without identification or with abnormally low prices.
  2. Avoid frequent adjustments: Reduce unnecessary lifting and lowering operations to minimize internal wear and pressure fluctuations in the cylinder.
  3. Regular inspections: Observe whether there are cracks, deformations, or gas leaks on the surface of the pneumatic rod (such as the seat slowly sinking). If any abnormalities are found, stop using it immediately.
  4. Self-replacement: If the pneumatic rod fails (such as the seat unable to rebound), you can purchase a new part of the appropriate model (costing about 30 yuan). When replacing, use a tool to tap the circular part around the pneumatic rod, remove the old part, insert the new part into the base, and sit on it to press and fix it, ensuring a secure installation.
