Office Chair on Fire
An office chair catching fire is usually caused by direct contact with a high-temperature heat source or a fire source igniting flammable materials. Common causes include electrical appliance malfunctions and improper use of open flames.

Fires Caused by Electrical Appliance Malfunctions
The accumulation of high temperatures from electrical appliances operating for extended periods is one of the significant reasons for office chairs catching fire. For example, on December 23, 2025, Mr. Han, a resident of Daxing District, left for work in a hurry and forgot to turn off his hairdryer, which he had left on a chair in his bedroom. As a high-power electrical appliance, a hairdryer generates continuous heat from its internal components when operating for a long time. If heat dissipation is inadequate, the heat will keep building up. When the temperature reaches a certain level, it can ignite the leather material in close contact with the chair. Leather materials usually contain flammable components such as oils and have a relatively low ignition point. Once exposed to a high-temperature heat source, they are highly likely to catch fire, ultimately resulting in the leather office chair being charred and deformed. This reminds us that after using electrical appliances, we must turn off the power promptly, avoid leaving them in operation for extended periods, and ensure there are no flammable items around the appliances, maintaining a safe distance.
Fires Caused by Improper Use of Open Flames
Improper use of open flames is also a common factor in office chairs catching fire. On March 5, 2025, the owner of a factory in Jinhua, Zhejiang, lit incense sticks in his office for blessings and then left. During the burning process of the incense sticks, their outer membranes gradually burned away. When the outer membranes fell off after burning, if they landed on flammable items such as office desks and chairs, they could ignite these items. Fortunately, an employee who returned to the office discovered the fire in time and controlled it, preventing more serious consequences. This shows that when using open flames, there must be a dedicated person to supervise, ensuring there are no flammable items around the open flames. Moreover, after use, the open flames must be completely extinguished to prevent rekindling.
To prevent fire accidents such as office chairs catching fire, we should enhance our fire safety awareness, use electrical appliances and open flames correctly, regularly check the safety of electrical equipment, avoid using open flames randomly in office areas, and ensure the safety of the office environment.
