Office Chair Not Rising
If an office chair fails to rise, it is mostly due to the failure of the gas lift rod, which can be resolved through troubleshooting, repair, or replacement. Details are as follows:

Troubleshooting
- Check the control button: Press and rotate the lift control button/lever repeatedly to feel for any stuttering or complete lack of resistance, which may indicate an issue with the button mechanism itself.
- Listen for sounds: Try lifting and lowering the chair while paying attention to any abnormal hissing air leaks or metal friction sounds. If there is a hissing sound, it may be due to aging seals or nitrogen leakage; if there is a metal friction sound, it may be due to internal blockage by debris or mechanical structure failure.
- Inspect connection points: Check for any noticeable wobbling or unusual noises at the connection between the chair base (five-star foot) and the underside of the seat cushion. This helps distinguish whether the issue is with the gas lift rod or other mechanical structures.
- Check the handle and pin: Turn the chair upside down and check if the end of the control handle accurately touches the small metal dot (pin) at the top of the gas lift rod. If misaligned, use a wrench to adjust the position of the base fixing screws.
Simple Fixes
- Rotate the adjustment button: If the chair sinks weakly, try rotating the base adjustment button multiple times. Sometimes, debris blocking the valve can cause malfunction.
- Overload recovery: For heavier individuals, the gas lift rod may become overloaded. In this case, repeatedly pressing down and then quickly lifting up can temporarily restore functionality.
- Compensate for wear gaps: If the handle cannot reach the pin even when pressed all the way down, stick a small piece of hard gasket (such as a coin or plastic piece) above the pin to compensate for the gap caused by wear.
- Lubricate the pin: Spray a small amount of WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap around the pin and press the handle repeatedly until the pin rebounds smoothly.
Replacing the Gas Lift Rod
If the above methods are ineffective, the gas lift rod needs to be replaced. First, safely remove the old gas lift rod by turning the chair upside down on a stable surface and gently tapping the connection points between the bottom of the gas lift rod and the base steel ring, as well as the top and the underside of the seat cushion, with a rubber mallet. Then, purchase a new gas lift rod on an e-commerce platform that meets size compatibility, safety certifications (prioritize products that comply with the national GB/T 2280 standard and have labels such as 'Level 4 Certification'), and an appropriate weight-bearing capacity. Insert the new gas lift rod directly into the center hole of the base, align the seat cushion with the top of the gas lift rod, and press down firmly until you hear a 'click' or feel a tight fit, indicating installation is complete.
