Neck Exercises on an Office Chair
Admin October 22, 2026
There are various neck exercises suitable for performing on an office chair. Here are some specific introductions:

Basic Neck Movements
- Rice Character Exercise: Maintain an upright sitting posture and imagine slowly writing the Chinese character for 'rice' (็ฑณ) in the air with the tip of your nose. Pause for 2 to 3 seconds in each direction (up, down, left, right) and perform 3 to 5 sets per day. This exercise can comprehensively move the neck joints, enhance the flexibility and coordination of the neck muscles, and relieve neck muscle tension.
- Flexion and Extension: Sit in a chair with your back straight. Slowly lower your head to bring your chin as close to your chest as possible, feeling the stretch in the back of your neck and holding for a moment. Then, slowly raise your head and tilt it back to feel the stretch in the front of your neck. Repeat this process. This exercise can effectively stretch the muscles on the front and back sides of the neck and improve neck blood circulation.
- Lateral Flexion: Tilt your head to the left, trying to bring your left ear close to your left shoulder, feeling the stretch in the right side of your neck. Then, repeat the movement on the other side. Do this several times back and forth. It can stretch the muscles on both sides of the neck and reduce lateral neck pressure.
- Rotation: Slowly turn your head to the left, looking over your left shoulder, and then turn it to the right, looking over your right shoulder. Move slowly during rotation. This exercise can move the neck joints and enhance the rotational function of the neck.
Targeted Strengthening Exercises
- Turtle Neck Correction: Gently press your fingers against your chin and push it backward horizontally to create a double-chin appearance. Repeat 8 times. This helps correct poor neck posture and strengthen the muscles on the front side of the neck.
- Resistance Stretching: Place your right hand on the right side of your head and gently pull it to the right while your head pushes to the left against the pull, feeling the stretch in the right side of your neck. Then, repeat on the other side. This can enhance the resistance ability of the neck muscles and improve neck stability.
- Backward Head Tilt Stretching: Cross your hands behind your head, tilt your head backward, and push your hands forward against the tilt, feeling the stretch in the front of your neck. This can effectively stretch the muscles on the front of your neck and relieve discomfort caused by forward head posture.
Shoulder Coordinated Movements
- Scapular Circles: Let your hands hang naturally by your sides. Perform circular movements of your scapulae by lifting them up, retracting them backward, lowering them down, and relaxing them. Do 5 circles in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. This can move the muscles around the scapulae and improve blood circulation in the shoulder and neck area.
- Shoulder Shrugs and Circles: Shrug your shoulders upward, trying to bring them close to your ears, and then circle them backward and then forward. Do this several times. This can relax the shoulder muscles, reduce shoulder pressure, and also have a certain relaxing effect on the neck.
