Office Chair Movement Reference
Admin October 10, 2026
Here are some movements that can be done on an office chair to help relieve fatigue from prolonged sitting and relax the muscles in various parts of the body:

Neck and Shoulder Movements
- Neck and Shoulder Stretch - Wrist: Extend your right arm with the palm facing up. Gently pull your fingers downward and backward with your left hand, feeling the stretch in your right wrist and forearm. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds, then switch hands and repeat. This movement relaxes the wrist muscles and reduces tension caused by prolonged mouse use.
- Neck and Shoulder Stretch - Shoulder: Straighten your arms, cross your fingers, and turn your palms outward. Gently raise your arms above your head, stretching your body, and feel the stretch in your shoulders and upper back. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds. It helps relieve shoulder soreness and improve shoulder blood circulation.
- Shoulder Opening Exercise: Sit straight on the edge of the chair, place one arm to the side, straighten your back, raise the other arm with the palm facing inward above your head, and tilt to the opposite side; or extend both arms backward, grasp the outer edge of the chair back, and push your chest forward. Hold each movement for 15 - 30 seconds. It enhances shoulder flexibility and prevents shoulder stiffness.
Back and Spine Movements
- Spine Extension: First, sit up straight, avoiding bending forward or arching your back or flaring your ribs. Cross your hands and reach upward, then exhale, feeling your abdomen gradually tighten, inhale and feel your chest expand, and imagine your spine extending. Repeat 5 - 10 times. It improves spine posture and relieves back fatigue.
- Thoracic Spine Rotation: Block your leg with your hand, keep your chest up but not your back, keep your hips as still as possible, and support the chair or extend your other hand backward, feeling a squeezing sensation in your shoulder blades and back. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds, then switch sides. It helps increase thoracic spine mobility and reduce back tension.
Waist and Hip Movements
- Hip Joint Stretch: Sit on the edge of the chair with your feet shoulder-width apart. Cross your ankles over the opposite knee, press your back forward and downward until your chest and abdomen are close to your calves and knees. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds, then switch sides. It stretches the muscles around the hip joint and relieves waist pressure.
- Iliopsoas Stretch: Sit on the front edge of the chair, extend one leg backward, and push your hip forward slightly. Be careful not to extend your lumbar spine forward. You can also do a lunge directly, sink your hip and push it forward while keeping your lumbar spine still. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds, then switch sides. It relaxes the iliopsoas and improves waist discomfort.
- Quadratus Lumborum Stretch: Block your leg with your hand to prevent lumbar spine rotation, extend your other hand forward and upward, and you can slightly side-bend your thoracic spine. You can also do it without raising your hand. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds, then switch sides. It helps relieve tension in the muscles on both sides of the waist.
